Style, at its essence, is an expression of self, and design is the medium for that expression. The most captivating ideas often emerge quietly: subtle yet ambitious, understated but intentional. Varun and Keta Shah of Workshop Inc. embrace their creative calling in this 1200 sq. ft. urban apartment in Ahmedabad. Much like a haute fashion show, the home reveals itself through layers of texture, craft, and undeniable style. Every surface is curated with the discernment of a couturier’s hand. Refined finishes and a symphony of forms come together in perfect balance. Together, they create an interior that feels both elegant and effortless.
Editor’s Note: Some homes make a statement through colour or scale, while others find their identity in the quiet confidence of detail. This residence embraces the latter, where texture, material, and craftsmanship become the language of self-expression. A restrained palette sets the stage for subtle contrasts, allowing stone, steel, wood, and fabric to create a layered dialogue between softness and structure. Rather than relying on excess, the design reveals its character gradually, much like a carefully tailored garment that rewards a closer look. The result is a home that reminds us that true style is not about standing apart, but about expressing who we are with clarity and intention. ~ Yashika Bajaniya
Inside a 1200 Sq. Ft. Urban Apartment in Ahmedabad Defined by Texture and Temperance | .Workshop Inc.
A monochromatic palette of beige, taupe, and greige forms the canvas, brought to life through texture. Ribbed stone cladding, woven wall panels, and bouclé upholstery lend depth.
Travertine stone and warm wood ceilings ground the space with warmth and texture. Cool metallic accents and sculptural furniture punctuate the calm, adding a modern industrial edge. The kitchen gleams in stainless steel-clad cabinetry softened by patterned wall tiles.
A stone-clad breakfast counter marks the end of the open kitchen. Beyond the counter, a six-foot stone-top dining table anchors the dining area. Its sculptural steel base sits beneath a folded metal pendant, creating a striking focal point. While organic mirrors by Josmo complete the dining accents, the carpet underneath the dining extends into the living room. A large white bouclé sofa anchors the living room. Nearby, a lush “living wall” installation by Dhaaga introduces vibrancy and breathes life into the space.
Calm and soft finishes are set against bold, modern gestures: cool metals converse with warm textures, stoic lines sit next to organic forms, and an industrial aesthetic is tempered with handcrafted richness. This duality runs through the home, as a conversation between two versions of the same narrative. The tension between these two narratives shapes the home, beckoning an alter ego.
The bedrooms continue this dialogue, each with a specific colour to highlight the details, as the base textures aid visual continuity. The first bedroom sports a bouclé headboard, layered against a blue patterned fabric panel framed in metal, which is paired with brushed-steel side tables and a sculptural light by Harshita Jhamtani Designs x Length Breadth Height.
The master bedroom with its accents in red inverts this hierarchy, with a steel bed back against fluted travertine panel, warmed by a red-toned artwork by Shahenshah Mittal, while playful ceramic faces by Claymen and Snehal Kashikar look towards the bed.
In the third bedroom, an expansive fabric panel with highlights in green extends along the wall, cocooning the space in subtle tactility.
The home’s alter ego unveils itself like a courtier’s work, elaborate and stitched in the best materials, embellished in edgy sequins yet soft and backed with comfort. The design emerges from both sides of the conversation and becomes a tale in the unfolding.
