The Cappuccino Home is a project very close to my heart. It began during the lockdown, when the client first reached out to me through Instagram. Since they were living abroad and travel restrictions were in place, they had received possession of the apartment which was their secondary home, but had never actually seen the space in person. I still remember showing them the apartment for the very first time over a video call, which is also how the entire design journey truly began.
The Little Details
Because the clients are not Indian citizens, most of the project had to be designed remotely, with only a few carefully planned site visits through the process. Naturally, this changed the way we communicated and designed, but it also made the collaboration far more thoughtful and personal.
The idea behind the secondary home was inspired by a cappuccino — warm, balanced, subtle, and comforting. I wanted the space to feel refined without being excessive. Nothing too loud or overly designed, but instead a home that feels calm, layered, and easy to live in.
One of the key requirements from the clients was the seamless integration of technology into the functionality of the home. This led us to create several intelligent design solutions that eventually became defining aesthetic elements within the space. Instead of creating a dedicated TV unit, for instance, we installed the television onto a sliding wardrobe shutter, allowing the room to feel visually cleaner and more open. In another room, since the dressing mirror could not face the bed, we designed a rotating panel with a TV on one side and a mirror on the other — so the mirror only appears while in use, while the television remains visible at all other times.
Working on solutions like these pushed us to approach the design language differently from what we would typically do. It was challenging in many ways, but also an incredibly enjoyable process because it encouraged us to think beyond conventional layouts and details.
The apartment spans 1,540 sq. ft. in Mumbai and came to us as a bare shell. Everything was built from scratch — from constructing walls to the final finishing touches — with the intention of creating a home that feels warm, effortless, and deeply personal.
