A Deep Rooted Indian Design Is Celebrated In This Bangalore Home | Stance Spaces

[Sassy_Social_Share]

Nestled in the leafy neighbourhood of Cooke Town in Bangalore, this striking modern home stands as a peaceful urban oasis. Designed specifically for a large joint family, the residence beautifully intertwines the deep rooted Indian tradition of communal living with the sleek, uncluttered lines of contemporary architectural design. It is a home intentionally built to celebrate the vibrancy of shared family life. It simultaneously ensures that every individual has a quiet, personal space to retreat to at the end of the day.

Stance Spaces

The fundamental challenge presented by the clients was as intricate as it is common in modern Indian society. How to create a cohesive, unified home for a multi-generational family that is seamlessly deep rooted in daily interaction. A home that offers distinct, private sanctuaries for each separate family unit.

In a joint family, the home must facilitate large gatherings, shared meals, and festive celebrations, but it must also respect the modern need for boundaries and solitude. To address this requirement, the architects designed the central spine of the floor plan with double-height courtyards, interlinking each floor with the other, creating a visual connection between the families.

From the exterior, the residence presents a modern façade without overwhelming the serene, tree-lined surroundings of its neighbourhood. The architects designed the facade thoughtfully, sporting sleek aluminium cladding alongside the raw aesthetic of exposed concrete textures. To soften these modern materials, they introduced wooden finishes throughout the envelope of the building.

Stepping inside a largely open layout plan allows for an unparalleled, seamless connection between the foyer, the formal living room, the expansive dining area, and the kitchen. This lack of visual barriers means the family can remain connected even while engaging in different activities.

Large window openings and strategically placed central courtyards act as the “lungs” of the house, drawing in abundant natural light and fresh air with rhythmic shadows throughout the day.

The floors are clad in Italian marble, its subtle veining reflecting the sunlight and elevating the home’s elegance. Furthermore, every corner feature customized furniture tailored to suit the specific dimensions and purpose of each space.

A deliberate colour strategy helps define the home’s different zones. The main communal spaces employ a relatively neutral and sophisticated colour palette—relying on warm whites, subtle greys, and natural tones. This neutrality serves as a calming primary visual anchor. In contrast, the architects dominated the private bedrooms with distinct, characteristic highlight colours & materials, making each room feel deeply personal, intimate, and reflective of the individual’s tastes.

At the very heart of the home lies its most captivating feature: the central double heighted courtyards. Trailing plants cascade over custom balcony planters, and indoor greenery is thoughtfully positioned throughout the hallways, transitional corridors, and quiet corners. The architects ensured to treat the residents to a refreshing, grounding view of nature from almost any vantage point in the house.
