This Home Is Transformed Into A Vibrant And Functional Space That Deeply Resonates With Indian Tradition | Envisage
The clients, a family of lawyers, sought a design that would reflect their South Indian roots and provide comfort for their homesick daughter-in-law, missing her native Chennai.
Athangudi tiles—with their vivid colors and eco-friendly craftsmanship—define the home, where striking blue tiles in the living and kitchen spaces are balanced by muted gray tiles elsewhere, creating a cohesive yet understated aesthetic.
Dakshinayan’s design philosophy embodies the harmonious fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. The living room reflects this blend, featuring Panchaloha idols of Vishnu’s ten avatars against a minimalist concrete backdrop that highlights the sculptures.
A vintage Temple Dam settee with Sarita Handa cushions seamlessly blends tradition and modernity.
A subtle kolam mural on a corner wall connects the foyer and living room, enhancing the cultural ambiance. This thoughtful incorporation of cultural elements enriches the living space without detracting from the modern aesthetic.
The dining area and its adjacent passage further exemplify this blend of tradition and modernity.Slightly elevated, the passage with Chettinad columns and a sloping rafter ceiling exudes grandeur and elegance.
A thinne (ledge wall) offers seating and defines the space, while the Jaisalmer stone floor with brass inlays and a rangoli pattern adds cultural continuity.
Private spaces prioritize comfort, with the parents’ room featuring a yellow-green floor and hand-painted Kalamkari wardrobes and saree curtains.
The soundproof pooja room balances practicality and serenity, with an exhaust fan providing ventilation despite no windows.
Beyond the residential space, Dakshinayan seamlessly integrates a functional workspace that reflects the diverse interests and professional needs of its occupants.
The office floor is accessed via a welcoming reception area with distinctive Jaisalmer steps, setting the tone for a sophisticated yet practical environment.
Personalized touches include a gaming desk in the client’s cabin and bespoke artwork in his wife’s, reflecting her interests in law, violin, and Bharatanatyam.
Integrated workstations and a creatively designed pantry promote efficiency and collaboration, while a stylish staff toilet adorned with patterned tiles and greenery adds a touch of charm.
The multifunctional lounge doubles as a guest bedroom with a sofa bed and entertainment amenities for comfort and versatility.
Saree curtains and vintage furniture alongside modern elements create a balance that is both nostalgic and contemporary.
In essence, Dakshinayan celebrates the essence of South Indian heritage through thoughtful and innovative design. Envisage has realized the clients’ vision, creating a home that is authentically Tamil yet modern.
This project shows how traditional elements can blend with contemporary design, creating a culturally rich, modern, and personalized home.
