  • This 700 sq ft Compact House Breathes Light And Air | M&M Studio

Nestled in the heart of Andheri, this compact 700-square-foot residence emerged from a heartfelt vision: a  home that breathes light and air, evoking a sense of calm and understated elegance. The homeowners longed for a sanctuary of their own where every detail harmonized subtly with the light and air—from the whitewashed walls to the minimal furniture. Their aspirations were clear: a home that, from the moment one steps inside, whispers promises of serenity and warmth, a true haven amidst the bustling neighborhood. To fulfill this, lead designers Prathamesh Mane and Yash Munj of Mumbai-based M&M Studio chose to embody minimalist Japanese design concepts and light-washed Scandinavian aesthetics.

Privacy at the Forefront from the Very Entrance

Thoughtful design takes center stage here right from the entrance, where privacy becomes a key concern. “The clients did not want any strangers waiting at the doorstep to get an unfiltered view of the living room,” begins Mane.

A simple yet ingenious solution—a discreet shoe rack accompanied by a side glass partition—solves this riddle while setting the tone for the rest of the space: a seamless balance between openness and privacy. This flows into the expansive living space, which spotlights the subtle elegance of bare walls and minimalistic decor.

Japandi Neutrals Meet Playful Pops of Color

White walls serve as a serene canvas with layers of beige and grey to echo the Japandi palette. But the visual energy comes through with selective splashes of color—the unexpected yet charming orange couch and the inviting bottle green of the kitchen entrance paneling, balanced by hints of cobalt blue in the bathroom.

Instead of confining the dining area to a cramped corner, the designers place the table centrally, adjacent to both the kitchen and the sofa, underscoring the importance of shared moments and community within the home.

“Artful niches filled with complementary minimalist decor items complete this set-up, while a semi-blurred glass door reveals the kitchen, where the designer has placed storage below the counter to maintain a clean, uncluttered look.”

Beginning from the living room itself, one truly witnesses how natural light resides as a celebrated guest in the residence. Large windows invite the sun to dance across polished floors, while a mirror strategically installed opposite a window reflects and amplifies this gentle radiance into the otherwise dark passage leading to the more private zones of the home. “Here, the designers demolished an existing wall to install rotatable fins that provide flexibility, gracefully modulate light, and safeguard the privacy of these intimate corridors.”

    Comfort and Playfulness

“In the grandparents’ and kids’ bedroom, the project reveals its true essence. The designers conceived the space to nurture and celebrate the joyous convergence of an intergenerational bond through comfort and playful warmth.”

The designers accommodate both rest and play here through features like dual pull-out beds and a multifunctional storage system.
