This Home With An Earthen Design Opens Out To Lush Farms Outside And Cosy Interiors Inside | Bhutha Earthen Architecture Studio
Vijayanadh, an IT professional, and his wife Mahalakshmi, a homemaker, approached Bhutha to build a home that reflected their values and promoted a natural, healthy lifestyle. Passionate about sustainability, they chose to embrace traditional building practices like Madras terrace roofing, lime mortar, and lime plastering.
They did not just envision this for themselves but for the generations to come. They dreamed of a timeless, personal space that blended eco-friendly design with a sense of belonging. Inspired by her ancestral home, Mahalakshmi wanted her children to grow up surrounded by tradition, culture, and values.
The home opens with a traditional porch featuring a Thinnai, exposed brick pillars, natural boulders, and a “zero-gravity” seater—blending tradition with comfort for relaxing evenings.
The ground floor includes a living room, a minimal kitchen, a utility, a powder room, and a master bedroom. The first floor includes a children’s bedroom, multipurpose room, and terrace offering fresh air, sunlight, and sunset views.
The site’s shape inspired a design that balances indoor-outdoor use while meeting site and family needs. The exterior blends exposed brick, stone lintels, wood, metal, and terracotta roofs on stone plinths for durability.
Terracotta tiles cover the floors, while glossy lime finishes in wet areas and touches of green oxide and Kota stone add freshness and a tactile experience.
Inside, the living room is visually connected to the kitchen and the stairway. Its highlight is a bay window with a green oxide seater, wooden storage beneath, and granite shelves on either side, opening to views of the outdoors.
The kitchen, designed to suit clients’ needs, includes space for traditional utensils, a natural fridge, and open shelving, with glazed lime finishes adding a freshness to the space. Bedrooms are bright, airy, and cosy with feature walls of exposed brick.
A multipurpose room upstairs is designed to adapt to activities like music, work, or study, which is complemented by tall windows facing the terrace. The terrace itself becomes a serene spot for yoga, exercise, or family dinners.
Indian sal wood craftsmanship is found throughout, from ripple-inspired door carvings to crafted windows balancing light, ventilation, and privacy.
Every detail resonates with simplicity, tradition, and warmth, giving Adorn a warm, natural feel that translates to a home where everything has meaning and a sense of belonging.
