The client approached us with a 4000 sq. ft. south-facing plot. The design intent was to build a house that has ample light and ventilation throughout the day and connects the family through spaces and levels.
This House Facing South Connects the Family Through Spaces and Levels | The Insideout Studio
The program dictated we have the ground floor for parking and services and start the house from the first floor level.
The first floor houses the common areas: formal and informal living rooms. Additionally, a raised garden extends from the informal living room, creating an elevated connection with nature.
The puja sits in a double-height space, forming the main courtyard of the house. It floods the area with natural light and serves as an interactive space across levels.
The dining, dry, and wet kitchens occupy further the periphery of the house, and a guest bedroom is tucked in the southwest corner.
The Puja sits majestically in a double-height space, floating over a waterbody with a striking concrete panel backdrop. However, this gives the impression that it’s emerging from a mass of concrete. Since the clients host large gatherings, they wanted the courtyard to open up to accommodate their guests.
The maid’s entry uses a separate staircase, tucked behind two utility spaces on the stilt and first floors.
The triple-height staircase courtyard seamlessly extends all the way to the top, where the staircase gracefully terminates. Furthermore, to fulfill the clients’ desire for a “Jagali katte” concept, we thoughtfully added a seating detail in the courtyard, creating a relaxed, village-inspired space for interaction.
The second floor includes two large bedrooms and a study. Meanwhile, the third floor features another bedroom, a dedicated spa, an entertainment room, and a bar that opens onto a landscaped terrace.
We used terracotta and tip wood as sun-breakers on this house’s south-facing side and added multiple skylights to ensure ample sunlight throughout the day.
The overall design language of the house is that of a modern contemporary house, with hues of luxury combined with traditional elements.
Altogether, this house facing south is connected through its levels by double and triple-height volumes, linking the sections seamlessly.
The design palette of the interiors is minimal yet opulent, resonating with the client’s tastes.
