Choosing a Pump for your home

Most homes don’t have much need for a pump. But, if you have a well or are in a flood risk area then you’re going to need to check out these dewatering pumps.

Purchasing the right pump is essential to ensure that it will work when you need it to. Being unable to access the water in the well or watching your home flood is not a nice feeling.

Before you purchase your pump, consider the following:

Flow Rate

The flow rate of a pump is how fast it will remove water from your property or bring it up the well.

Before you can choose it you’ll need to consider what is most suitable.

For example, if you have a basement that is likely to flood you’ll need to calculate how much water is likely to come into the basement and at what speed. The flow rate of your pump will need to be higher than this figure if you want the pump to clear the water instead of it building up.

Likewise, a well pump needs to lift enough water up the shaft and into the house to give you a good flow at the faucet. The flow rate at the pump will probably be double what you’re getting at the taps; pumping uphill can take a serious toll on any pump.

Piping

If you have existing piping you’ll want to have a pump that can use what you already have; this will save you money on the installation cost. Of course, this may not always be possible; depending on the condition of your pipes and the flow rate you require.

You’ll also need to consider your current water usage and the rating of the pump; to ensure it can supply all the water you need at the same time.

Reputation

It is worth taking a moment to consider the reputation of the pump you’re considering. You can check how long a manufacturer or supplier has been in business, and take a look at social media postings.

This will give you a good idea of the quality of a pump and whether it’s something you want in your home. Don’t forget that it’s virtually impossible to keep every customer happy, even the best firms will have some negative comments about them.

The best pumps are likely to be more expensive. But, if you’re going to be using it every day, or relying on it in the worst situations; you want one that is going to do the job properly. It’s worth spending a little more.

Space Available

While it is possible to go completely over the top and get a pump that is much more powerful than you need. It is also important to consider the space you have available; especially if the pump has to fit into an existing space.

Measure the space you have before choosing your pump or consider where else it could be situated; this will save a lot of issues after you’ve bought it.
