This House in Amritsar Whispers the Grandeur of Indo-British Architecture | Studios PMB
Amritsar reveals itself as a city where history is woven into every corner and visitors are immediately captivated by its architecture. The city, known for its vibrant energy and sacred spaces, offers an intoxicating mix of regal legacy and spiritual calm. Here, the built environment reflects a nuanced sophistication where Indo-British elements and Mughal influences unite harmoniously. Every structure narrates a tale of the past, and as one explores its rich streets and grand facades, a palpable reverence takes hold. The city, defined by its intricate convergence of tradition and contemporary influences, is a living testament to the architectural evolution of the region.
“If I were to label this style, it would be ‘timeless royalty with a touch of historic opulence,” says Praneet, the mastermind behind this project. Her vision brought forth a delicate fusion of regal and modern elements. Thus, here the traditional motifs and sleek forms coexist in perfect harmony.
The aesthetic is refined, sophisticated, yet inviting—a space that embodies the past while embracing the present. Each room in this house in Amritsar is a tribute to cohesive design, where the furniture, architectural accents, and even the walls speak the same visual language.
Praneet reveals that attention to detail was paramount: “It required exacting precision to ensure that the mouldings, motifs, and patterns played their part in enhancing the narrative without overwhelming the design.”
The project’s success lies in its meticulous curation. Moreover, it is a balance between sourcing unique, ornate pieces and collaborating with skilled artisans and craftsmen. Custom-created pieces were integrated to elevate the design without compromising on efficiency. Thus, ensuring the vision of this house in Amritsar is translated seamlessly into the physical space.
The home unfolds across two levels, divided into distinct wings that serve both as a private residence and an extension of the family’s adjacent hospital. As one steps through the grand wooden doorway, they are immediately embraced by the family room’s stately yet inviting atmosphere. This space is a visual tapestry, anchored by a freestanding diwan that sits opposite an antique wooden fireplace. Therefore, creating a delicate balance between past and present.
High coffered ceilings lend the room a sense of openness, while two seating areas invite intimate gatherings. Rich, emerald curtains, intricately tied, frame the space, and Victorian crystal chandeliers cast a warm glow over the room. Moreover, creating a portal into historic elegance redefined for modern living.
The wall coverings, adorned with vintage patterns, offer a tactile connection to the past. As one moves through the arched French doors, the dining room reveals itself. It is a space that transcends mere functionality. Thus, evoking a sense of dining not just in grandeur but in the company of royals.
The dining table, surrounded by elaborately detailed chairs crafted by the Studios PMB team, is a central feature. Thus, resting elegantly between a wall mirror and a vintage wooden console.
This room speaks to an era of regal banquets and intimate family gatherings alike. The coffee table ensemble, accompanied by a few chairs, offers the perfect setting for informal conversations.
Yet, what leaves the most indelible mark in this space is the ceiling. It is an intricate masterpiece adorned with floral motifs, each one carefully painted on wood. This detail, suspended above the dining area and the petite coffee space, adds an ethereal touch to the already grand interiors. The ceiling becomes a focal point, drawing the eye upward and inviting contemplation.
Ascending to the more private quarters on the first floor, the residence divides into two wings. Each features a living room and two bedrooms, all centred around an open courtyard.
Among the four bedrooms, the Mahogany Suite stands out as a sanctuary of warmth and elegance. The design language embodies subtle grandeur, with herringbone wooden flooring, gentle wall moldings, and neutral suede upholstery. Thus, creating an atmosphere of refined sophistication.
The monochromatic walls, adorned with minimalistic artwork, add to the suite’s understated luxury. Each of the other bedrooms mirrors this openness, offering a calming sense of serenity and security.
The furniture, textiles, and decor in these spaces are thoughtfully curated to create an ambience of quiet opulence.
The interplay of light and shadow through these elements creates a dynamic space that feels alive and deeply connected to its surroundings.
From the grand family room, rich with layers of heritage, to the intimate bedrooms that exude tranquillity, this residence stands as a testament to the power of nuanced, sophisticated architecture.
In Anant Mahal, the designers thoughtfully conceived every inch of space, creating a seamless blend of historical and contemporary design.
Even transitional spaces, such as stairway landings and corridors, feature a bold yet timeless colour palette. Meanwhile, reflective surfaces enhance visual depth and break the monotony of single-surface treatments.
The courtyard offers a serene space for gathering, replete with subtle nods to traditional architecture. The jaali patterns, arched pathways, and traditional flooring create a harmonious connection between indoors and outdoors.
Additionally, its balance between royal influences and contemporary charm creates a sanctuary where history and design converge. Thus, leaving an indelible imprint on those who walk through its corridors.
This home offers more than just a place to live; it creates an experience that evokes a sense of timelessness, honouring the past, embracing the present, and shaping the future with an enduring commitment to elegance. Moreover, this Amritsar residence reflects the grace and grandeur of a bygone era, reimagined for modern sensibilities.
