  • This Pent House Design Creates an Ambience of a Bungalow in an Apartment | The Design Alley

‘The Arched Penthouse’ is an apartment transformed into a pent house design. Located in a residential society situated in the vicinity of a major highway in the town, designing the interior of this apartment was challenging in many aspects. Most of the spaces are already defined, like they usually are as far as apartment architecture is concerned, we aimed to create the ambience of a bungalow in an apartment.

The 3500 sq. ft. apartment, with some additions and alterations, has been transformed into a luxurious 4BHK pent house design. To start with, the rigid grid of an apartment is opened up simply by knocking off most of the internal walls. They have been replaced by furniture that provides storage space and display and, at the same time, acts as partitions between spaces.

The entrance lobby is adorned with veneer panelling and a ceiling that exudes warmth. The main door is arched, with a brass grill and brass nameplate adjacent to it. The opposite wall has an arched niche sitting out. Arched mouldings and groves run on the panelling and ceiling, giving a hint of the design theme. The foyer thus creates a welcoming vibe instantly.

    Cohesive Aura

The living room is the most happening space in any house, as it is a common space utilised by all the family members as well as the guests. Here, the living room was huge and rectangular and divided into two sections because of the opening leading to the kitchen; thus, a vaulted POP ceiling was designed to control the volume and give it a cohesive look.

The wall between the living and kitchendining is knocked down to provide a storage cum 2-way display partition unit. This display unit provides a translucency to both spaces and keeps them visually connected. The front wall has a TV unit with a beautiful wallpaper backdrop. One of the shorter sides of the living room has huge windows with plantations outside it, while the other shorter side opens up into a balcony. A quaint reading corner enjoys the entire view of the house.

The dining space is converted into a double-height space in order to provide access to the upper floor. This space also gives a stack ventilation effect to the house. A beautiful stone dining table in green tones placed at the centre is truly the centre of attraction. A huge chandelier suspended over it adds grandeur to this double-height space. A beautiful wooden staircase leads to the upper floor from behind the dining table. The dining space thus enjoys the view of the entire house by and large. The kitchen and dining spaces are visually connected and barrier-free but are defined by an otherwise merging passage with arched brass inlay in flooring and an arched ceiling above.

    Compact and Functional

The kitchen layout is compact yet fully functional. The open layout lets the person working in the kitchen be connected with the entire house. There is an island cooking platform at the center of the kitchen. An elevated breakfast counter is attached to it on the front, which also obstructs the visibility and renders privacy for cooking activity.

On the rear side, there is this huge furniture unit that houses the preparation counter, sink, appliances, storage, and crockery display. This unit itself acts as a partition between the kitchen and its utility space. Adjacent to the kitchen is a puja room, while dining space is in the front.

    Bedrooms

The original layout had two bedrooms opening up in the dining space. To bring some privacy and amplify storage space, the wall between the two bedrooms was knocked down and a small lobby was created, giving access to both bedrooms. This lobby is flanked by unidentifiable storage furniture on both sides and at the end, it culminates into a beautiful veneer panel with arched groves. The flooring of this lobby has arched inlays in brass. Entrance doors of both bedrooms, i.e., the master bedroom and guest bedroom, are placed in front of each other. A wardrobe divides the two bedrooms instead of a wall. Some parts of the wardrobe is operable from each bedroom.

The master bedroom has a soothing colour palette and is adorned with beautiful wallpaper and paintings. A cozy seating nook is designed at the sunken window.

The guest bedroom has an arched bedhead with ethnic patterns and moldings. Both the bedrooms have an attached walk in closet and bathroom each.

    Lounge

The sleek wooden staircase in the dining area leads to the lounge on the upper level. This lounge acts as a connecting space and is flanked by Son’s bedrooms from both sides. The lounge opens into the semi-covered terrace in the front, while there is a huge window at the rear wall to facilitate stack ventilation. The wall between the lounge and one of the bedrooms is replaced by a massive and beautiful display unit. The door of the bedroom becomes the part of this unit.

    Clutter Free Design

Both the bedrooms are designed for young boys who have yet to complete their education. Thus, tossing out the concept of a typical bedroom layout, the concept of an island bed with study space at its rear is incorporated. This layout brings about novelty to the space and makes it clutter-free. However, ample storage is provided in the study space.

Both these bedrooms have plantation nooks and enjoy the full view of the terrace on the east side. Both the bedrooms also have walk-in closets with attached bathrooms. Even though both these bedrooms are conceptually similar, they create a different vibe, just like the two brothers who have individual temperaments despite having the same set of parents!

    The Terrace

Half of the upper level forms the terrace of the pent house design. The terrace is placed along the eastern side and enjoys a breathtaking view of the mountains on one side while the expanding city skyline on the other. The terrace is approachable from the lounge as well as both bedrooms. Moreover, the middle part of the terrace is covered with an elegant arched pergola. Pockets of thoughtfully designed sit-outs and plantations make it an ideal venue for family gatherings and parties.
