ANANDI is a modern tropical house nestled in a dense residential colony. The 8500-square-foot plot is surrounded by two multi-story apartments. That is a challenging point for designing the residence with adequate natural ventilation and light while ensuring privacy.
Editor’s Note: “This Maharashtra residence, with its unique rustic charm, blends Shahabad stone and Kota stone into a sophisticated material symphony. The vernacular-inspired design seamlessly intertwines modern needs with traditional architectural grace. Inside, a warm aura and fluid outdoor openings craft a serene and inviting living experience.” ~Simran Khare

Accordingly, the modern tropical house has two courtyards: one is the garden courtyard, which acts as a connecting space between the main living areas, bedrooms and foyer entrance and the other is the internal courtyard, which connects the ground floor and first floor, giving abundant natural light and greenery throughout the day.
The residence exudes a unique character through its earthy tones. The material palette is a combination of Kota and Shahabad stone, reclaimed wood, exposed brick cladding, natural clay tiles for roofing, and black basalt stone cladding, which helps create a rustic yet refined aura and vernacular-inspired forms.
As one enters the thresholds of these dwellings, the entrance verandah is designed with the unique traditional character of “Zarokha,” connected between the entrance verandah and the living room.
The entrance lobby has a stone Ganesha statue on a traditionally designed wooden console table with a cane ceiling design that gives a very cosy effect.
The living room blends traditional and modern elements, featuring a high vaulted wooden ceiling and large windows that create an airy ambience.
Earthy wood tones provide warmth, while modern furniture with clean lines and plush cushions enhances comfort.
Thoughtful lighting highlights architectural details, and decorative wooden screens add traditional elegance, achieving a harmonious and stylish retreat.
Moving further, the dining area showcases a sophisticated wooden table accompanied by stylish, comfortable chairs. Further adjacent is the modern kitchen, featuring sleek wooden cabinetry and cutting-edge appliances.
Large windows and thoughtfully placed greenery enhance the ambience, creating a harmonious blend of elegance and warmth.
The master bedroom exudes a blend of elegance and tranquility. Thus features a spacious layout with a stylish wooden bed and contemporary wall designs.
Large windows allow natural light to flood the room. Thus highlighting the subtle decor and earthy tones. Thoughtfully chosen furnishings and decorative accents also create a serene and sophisticated retreat.
Bar room: this room features high, sloped ceilings with wooden beams and warm pendant lights that create an inviting atmosphere. Thus, it is complemented by textured plaster walls and natural wood finishes.
The seating area features stylish upholstered chairs and blue bar stools around a sleek, under-lit counter.
Decorative touches, such as globe wall art and vibrant paintings, add personality, while large windows flood the space with natural light, ensuring a bright, airy, and welcoming ambience.
Moving further, this outdoor sit out combines traditional charm with contemporary comfort, overlooking a picturesque gazebo. The space features a high, wooden ceiling with robust beams and pillars that provide ample shade.
Comfortable wicker furniture with plush yellow cushions and matching tables adds rustic elegance. Moreover, the view of the manicured lawn and lush greenery is enhanced by the brown-tiled roofs of the gazebo and surrounding structures. Thus creating a serene and inviting ambience for relaxation and social gatherings.
The meticulously landscaped courtyard features lush greenery, strategic lighting, and a deep stambha as an elegant centerpiece, blending cultural heritage with contemporary design.
Moreover, comfortable outdoor seating invites relaxation, embodying the harmony between tradition and modernity in this stylish tropical oasis.
