The multigenerational home is a thoughtful play of levels, optimizing proximity and ease of movement. We tried to fuse the contemporary forms with the attitude of vernacular space-making.
The Multigenerational Home Is A Thoughtful Play Of Levels | One mm Design Studio
Integral to the cultural, social, religious and geological identity, every place has its own language of Architecture and designers must embrace that.
The façade is done with Jodhpur sandstone, which is local to the region. The meticulously crafted elevation style makes it look traditional yet contemporary through the fusion of modern and classical elements.
After the first look, you will come across an intricately carved Mandala wooden gate with brass inlay after climbing the wide granite staircase.
Clients, who have a legacy of building and running businesses since generations majorly living in Mumbai, wanted something that’s truly Indian.
Beyond the door, there is a huge lobby area, which acts as the central collecting and meandering space of the house through its evergreen checkered flooring design.
The lobby area also gives way to the drawing room, segregated by just levels, and a way to the kitchen along with dining through a series of steps.
Thus, this multigenerational home caters to the diverse needs and tastes of each generation, ensuring a harmonious coexistence of individual tastes.
The intent was to make the space look grand rather than divide it through walls. We tried to segregate the territories through flooring, creating gateways and pathways, and definitely levels.
All the furniture pieces that we come across are either handcrafted or adaptively reused; that is what the land of Jodhpur is known for. The intricacy of carvings and the smoothness of plane surfaces were made to co-exist in balance across materials and forms.
The upper floor houses private rooms and a common seating hall for religious and social get-togethers. The use of Jaisalmer and white mint stone, along with a wooden touch, gives this house a unique and charming energy.
This project is a testament that the ideas of “urban” and “native” can coexist. This home is a gift from the grandparents to their grandchildren, just to make sure that they know where they belong, and that is why we named it “Viraasat: An Ode to Inheritance.”
