How to Create a Cosy Home
It takes more than draping a beautiful throw across your sofa to create the feel of a cosy home. You must consider the colour scheme of a room as well as your lighting to create the desired effect. Even when you decorate correctly, you will need to do some maintenance to ensure it feels as cosy as it looks. The following information will help you to create a cosy home that will be inviting this winter.
Lighting
Most people wake up while it is still dark and often come home after dark, which is why homes need additional lighting in the winter. You want to ensure that you include the three different types of lighting – ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting. Ambient lighting comes from your ceiling light or main light in your room. Task and accent lighting are used to light up areas where you perform tasks (like a desk lamp) or spotlighting an object or area to draw the eye. Table lamps along with under cabinet are great at balancing lighting levels throughout your home.
When you think of a cosy home, you probably imagine roaring modern fireplace designs. If you have a fireplace, light it and enjoy the warmth and flickering lights that are created by a fireplace. If you do not have a fireplace and do not want to install one, you can create the warm glow of a fireplace by placing flickering candles around the room.
Assess Your Natural Lighting
Does your home appear gloomy during the summer? If the answer is yes, you may want to think about making some changes to your doors and windows. Installing French sliding doors or a skylight can add some much-needed light to your home.
Floor Coverings
Homes with wood beamed ceilings and hardwood floorings create a snug and inviting room because the warm tones of the wood play off one another. However, many modern or minimalist homes feel cold. Luckily, you can liven up these spaces with a few rugs. Ensure that the rugs are size appropriate and coordinate with your furnishings and decor. Rugs not only create a cosy look, but they also make your floors feel much warmer underfoot.
Furnishings
Winter is the perfect time to create an inviting home. You can add seasonal charm to your rooms using textured cushions, faux-knitted candles, log baskets and beautiful throws. These items can easily be interchanged throughout the years, according to the seasons.
Insulate Your Home from the Cold
Blinds are wonderful during the summer; however, as the temperatures begin to fall, you want something that adds interest and helps to keep those cold temperatures out. Layer your curtains or choose heavier curtains that have a thermal lining to help create a cosy home. Make sure that any leaks in your windows or roof are fixed. Finally, purchase some draught excluders to prevent air from entering your home under your doors.
Choose Warm Colours
During the summer, you tend to opt for cool colours like blue. In the winter, you should choose warm colours like golds, reds and coppers. Make sure that you choose shades that you love and uses these colours on accessories around your room. Lampshades, knickknacks and artwork can help provide you with inspiration on the best colours to choose for your winter decor. Using warm colours in your accessories is so easy when you have a neutral colour scheme.
