  • The Interior Of This House In Chennai Is One Of A Kind | HaakaD Architects & Designers

The interior of this house in Chennai is one of a kind, as the client of this project is an entrepreneur and industrialist who is living with his parents, wife, and two kids. They are an orthodox family and are more into Carnatic music. They want their apartment to be modern, but at the same time, it should reflect their backdrop. So we thought of approaching this project in a modern, eclectic interior style. Client bought two flats and we converted them into a single duplex apartment. This input was given to the builder by us at the time of this floor construction.

    Spatial Planning

We then converted the DB line to a single line, and we made some civil modifications as per the client’s requirement. So on the 7th floor, we had a foyer, a living room, a kitchen, and one bedroom, which is for parents. On the 8th floor, there are 3 bedrooms: one is the master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, one is for kids, and another is for guests. We also have a secondary living room, where we have a workstation and window seater as well so that it can be a hangout spot for the client or his wife.

They also teach tabla to kids in the evenings. Each floor has balconies, one of which is used for gardening and the other for housekeeping services.

According to the builder’s plan, the flats were designed as 2BHK apartments. However, we made some civil changes to meet our client’s requirements. We converted one of the bedrooms into a kitchen. Furthermore, we removed the builder-provided kitchen and transformed that space into a dining area with a nook for puja.

    Redesigning Spaces

On the 8th floor, we redesigned the foyer area into a walk-in wardrobe, converted part of the living area into a master bedroom, and left the remaining portion for the double-height ceiling cutout space.

However, we have maintained a neutral tone throughout the house in Chennai, as the builder’s building block has been designed in such a way that there is very little natural ventilation.

This neutral tone has thus helped us bring out the essence of the space and client’s taste to enhance this we have made the wooden tone as a darker colour tone to contrast with other design elements.

The wooden tone each space will be in different tone in order to show the difference in between the spaces.

    Bedroom Design

The client wanted a simpler design for his bedroom compared to the other rooms. The key highlights in the bedroom are the fabric-covered bed and a TV unit with a tile backdrop.

The overall summary of this project is that we created it as per the client’s needs and kept it simple so that too much wouldn’t clutter the space or meet the requirements.

The kids room is the only space where we haven’t touched the wooden tone. In that particular space, the client wanted it to be more colourful and a little fun for their kids. However, in that space, we have used five colours almost to get what the client needed, and we made bunk beds for the kids.

    Parent’s Room

We kept the parents’ bedroom in beige and white since the space is small and to accommodate their age-related preferences.

To summarize, a simple and elegant style interior with mix of the tradition can enlighten the space.
