We set out to create an apartment that blends Japandi Interior with an Indian grace. Our endeavor as interior designers was to encapsulate the serene essence of our clients’ unique personalities within the confines of their living space. Nestled within the vibrant urban landscape of Surat lies an apartment that serves as a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city life.
Editor’s Note: “A captivating play of pastels and greys evokes a sense of warmth and neutrality within this abode in Surat. The interiors exude minimalist elegance and serve as a tranquil oasis for the residents. Lime wash textures grace the walls, merging with the organic allure of stones, cocooning the space in sheer elegance.” ~Simran Khare
An Apartment That Blends Japandi Interior With An Indian grace | Sharan Architecture + Design
As one crosses the threshold marked by a solid wood main door, a sense of spaciousness is immediately evoked, despite its physical dimensions. The handleless design lends an illusion of grandeur. Further, a hallway unfolds, revealing a private lift discreetly concealed behind panelling.
An engraved quote, “You are exactly where you need to be,” adorns the lift’s button panel. This sets a tone of inspiration that permeates the space. Even more, the journey culminates in a captivating mural adorned with clay boats. This symbolises the welcoming spirit that awaits within.
The living room serves as an epitome of minimalistic elegance. It is bathed in light and neutral hues that accentuate the sense of openness.
A basalt center table commands attention amidst bespoke brass hanging lights. It is designed to illuminate and accentuate the space.
Sustainability is at the core of our design ethos. It is thus, evident in the use of eco-friendly materials – lime wash textures on walls, reclaimed wood in furniture, and the organic allure of natural stones.
The color palette chosen for this Indian and Japandi Interior project speaks a language of warmth and neutrality. Further, it is accentuated by delicate pastels and invigorating greys for a touch of freshness.
Moving further seamlessly into the informal gathering area, a discreet sliding door leads to an integrated pantry. This enhances both the functionality and the aesthetic appeal.
The dining table, a standout feature in the central activity area, boasts a beautiful dark polish that adds depth to the overall color palette.
Repurposed sleeper wood from railways finds new life in the form of a distinctive breakfast table. This adds a touch of character amidst the neutral ambiance.
However, each bedroom and bathroom within the apartment is a thoughtful reflection of the occupants’ preferences and lifestyles.
The powder bathroom surprises with its cozy ambiance. It is however, the courtesy of mixed printed black tiles that imbues the space with serenity.
Furthermore, the son’s bedroom exudes modern rustic charm, featuring a low-height platform bed and brick-tiled wall and platform.
In contrast, the parents’ bedroom radiates a sense of security with its intricately detailed four-poster bed adorned with brass accents.
Meanwhile, the master bedroom introduces a modern touch with a stone bed back and a soothing color palette that promotes relaxation.
The pooja room, designed with Jainism in mind, however, serves as a sanctuary of tranquility. A circular cutout ceiling clad in wood creates an atmosphere of serenity, while basalt stone panels house brass shelves for deities, each engraved with shlokas. An openable louvre ensures both air circulation and adherence to the client’s religious practices.
All things considered, light-colored engineered wooden flooring and wooden paneling with a light polish create a sense of cohesion and continuity.
In summary, the apartment is a celebration of imperfection, a canvas where beauty intertwines with practicality and the modern allure of Japandi design. Each element, carefully curated and thoughtfully placed, narrates a story of elegance, authenticity, and a harmonious blend of cultures and design philosophies.
