A contemporary abode rooted in earthy colors | Saniya Kantawala Design

Fawn home crafts an airy an breezy narrative that rejoices being in earthy colors and pastel mood.

High-density urban areas require spaces that are versatile and accommodate diverse functions. On the contrary, unitary areas such as bedrooms are usually suitable for only a particular purpose. Drawing inspiration from this concept, the Fawn Home has a distinctly re-imagined layout wherein a three-bedroom house has been converted into a two-and-a-half-bedroom abode with multi-functional, clutter-free spaces. Designed for a nuclear family of three, the home is informed by minimalism in warm hues and earthy colors of fawn, which is a light yellowish-tan colour.

Editor’s Note: The spacious, open layout of the Mumbai abode welcomes everything positive. As the soothing morning rays materialise, the earthy pastel walls, light veneers, and neocemented flooring make the space more divine, further adding to the spacious appeal. The serene atmosphere breaks character in the kid’s room, revealing the designer’s in-depth understanding of the client. It is interesting to see that gradual transition using terrazzo patterns while passing from the bedroom to the bathroom via the walk-in closet. – Gopika Pramod

A contemporary abode rooted in earthy colors | Saniya Kantawala Design

Located in Oberoi Esquire, Goregaon, Mumbai, one enters the 1400 sq ft home via a bijou corridor that leads to the open living and dining area. The kitchen and the powder room are on the right side of the hallway. The living area fluidly extends into the multi-purpose study along with the two bedrooms with an ensuite each. The initial layout of the home featured three bedrooms and a kitchen cum living area.

Accentuating the open-plan layout, the living room leads to the dining area comprising a dining table, six chairs, and a cabinet for storage and display knick-knacks. Above the table is a custom pendant light where the family can write their thoughts on a piece of paper and hang it. The cabinet behind the light features artefacts from Pure Concepts.

Though compact in square footage, the Fawn Home creates distinct spatial experiences while mitigating architectural hindrances such as walls. A sense of fluidity pervades across the home, helping maintain a visual connection and thus creating a sense of expanse. The clients also had a Vastu consultant onboard, and some design decisions were altered and reworked based on these suggestions. For instance, an internal wall is broken and replaced with a glass partition to create the study, which can be enclosed for privacy.

Each space has been provided with a unique character to keep the look cohesive yet distinct. The living celebrates muted notes of Fawn in various dimensions. Neo-cemented flooring with embedded brass chips from Colour Coats imbues a touch of glamour. Not only does the cooling material feel great on the underfoot, but the neutral colour palette also creates a cohesive scheme adding panache and richness to the entire space. Instead of curtains, blackout screens and wooden panels along the wall-to-wall window have been used. A Rugberry rug anchors the centre table by ZA Works.

Sliding doors help create a greater sense of space and tackle space crunches in the 100 sq ft kitchen. The customised kitchen has a breakfast counter as the perfect in-kitchen hangout spot for the family. Flooring by Colour Coats and Rich Tabu veneer in the cabinetry layer this space with luxury. An interplay of material and subtle hues, such as cork in the central drawer, veneer wastage, stone counter and metal handles, break the monotony.

The kitchen and the passageway connecting to the foyer are on the left side of the dining area. The design intent was to let the aisle connect seamlessly with the dining space. However, as per the suggestion of the Vastu consultant, doors were added to segregate this zone. As a result, though both the kitchen and foyer doors maintain design continuity, but are at a different level.

The neutral shell and sublime colour palette lend the Fawn Home a soft, organic feel. Carefully curated furnishings, prints and patterns provide the different spaces with a distinct personality and cosy vibe. A practical separation of spaces lends a sense of continuity and ensures the layout is decidedly functional and airy.

As per the client brief, one of the bedrooms was converted into the study and integrated into the living area. This space serves as the half bedroom or multi-purpose room cum study. To make the most of limited square footage, a sofa cum-bed accommodates guests, and sliding glass doors demarcate the study from the rest of the living room. Motorised blinds offer privacy as required. The study features custom furniture made from pine wood, while the panelling in the area is made from Pine wood sawdust.

The daughter is an aspiring DJ, and thus the decor resonates with her personality with eccentric hues and accents. Terrazzo from Kalinga Stone has been used on the walls and bedside drawers for a cohesive look. Custom lights, wooden vents in the AC and bedding by Sarita Handa, layer this space with elegance. The glass doors feature motorised blinds for privacy while maintaining a visual connection. Pink and green-veined marble adorns the bathroom and is offset by the geometrical patterns of the terrazzo basin.

Clean-lined layouts and thoughtful interior planning make the bedrooms seem more spacious. Defined by undertones of sage, the master bedroom features the same flooring as the living area. The wall behind the bed is made from 12 mm thick marble tiles that were cut and neatly installed to create a focal point. Customised by Harshita Jhamtani, a pair of cactus-shaped lamps flank the bedside. Along with a wardrobe, a generous walk-in closet next to the bathroom features traditional block-printed leaves and flowers by ZA Works on the veneer.
