Nestled in the plush, upcoming neighbourhood of Navi Mumbai, the Teal Address is a quaint and minimal home for a family of four, designed by Sagi Architects. Firstly, this 1700 sq. ft. abode, perched on the 7th floor has expansive views of the salt pans and of the lush greenery. The apartment features contemporary and simple geometric elements that strike a delicate balance with multiple textures and statement furniture pieces.
Editor’s Note: The Navi Mumbai home is a perfect balance of pastel blue and shades of brown, a combination rarely seen in most Indian homes. The sharp lines of the interior elements and the refreshing combination of dry and fresh plants frame the picture-perfect home. As one walks towards the bedroom, the browns progress into a warm grey, just like a sunset. When paired with the constant blue, it creates a colour duo that instantly puts you to sleep. – Gopika Pramod
Contemporary and Simple Geometric Elements that strike a Delicate Balance | Sagi Architects
Splashes of blue complemented with the natural wooden finishes and greys bring much-needed calm to the hectic lives of homeowners. Doctors by profession and party hosts by passion, the clients also wanted a balance in their personal and professional lives. The architects, driven by this brief, created a warm and welcoming home through its geometric elements, colours and finishes.
The apartment boasts a well-organized floor plan that features open living and dining areas to accommodate friends and family. The living room is further flanked by the master bedroom on the right, and a kitchen, a den room, and the parents’ and guest bedrooms on the left.
The living room’s grey textured painted walls act as a blank canvas to display artwork. Also, the chic tan leather chairs and warm-toned veneer paneling add contrast and texture to the space.
The bar cabinet made out of frosted, brown mirror framed in contrasting wooden-finish fins draws attention. It quickly becomes guests’ favourite spot during parties, while remaining a subtle backdrop otherwise. Additionally, a cleverly carved-out, niche clad in mirror adds a visual break to the cabinet while doubling as a buffet counter for guests.
Another important space in the brief was their kitchen. With a shared love for food, the clients wanted a kitchen where cooking is a place to make memories together. Planned alongside the dining room, the kitchen layout creates a sense of openness, allowing unobstructed movement while the veneer panelling acts as a divider offering some privacy. The dining area exudes charm with a glossy dining table with intricate metal inlay work. Dining chairs upholstered in turquoise blue velvet, adding a pop of colour to the otherwise neutral palette of the room.
The powder bathroom is adorned with a mix of terrazzo tiles and cerulean blue wallpaper. A floor-length mirror wall with melting ball lights enhances the minimalist aesthetic of the space.
Carrying the concepts of minimal and clutter-free design, the master bedroom is furnished in shades of greys, blues and a soft shade of veneer. Also, the warm grey-hued, floral-patterned wallpaper is the backdrop for the bed. The doors to the master bathroom and closet are seamlessly concealed within the veneer panelling – a theme congruent across all rooms.
The same material palette basically extends into the master bathroom and walk-in closet, creating a cohesive design. A cleverly crafted dressing mirror in the closet can be slid inside a niche, revealing the stunning view of the salt pans.
The guest room further follows the muted, neutral colour scheme of the rest of the home, accentuating the panelling and loose furniture to add character and warmth to the room. The full-length mirror cleverly conceals storage space while creating a spacious, hotel room-like atmosphere – perfect for guests to rest comfortably.
In contrast, the bedroom for the couple’s parents is functional and cosy, featuring minimal furniture and simple finishes like PU paint. Despite its modest size, the room boasts floor-length windows with a scenic view of the salt pans.
The bed recesses amongst cabinets, and the armchair is in warm, neutral-toned fabric in a delicate floral pattern to create a homely atmosphere. The layout of the room also utilizes nooks for concealed storage and sleek niches for displaying books and artefacts on the exterior walls.
The project overall brings together concepts of minimalism, functionality, and geometric elements to create a home filled with warmth. With an intent to transform a house into a home, the design is a reflection of the couple and their personalities.
