The journey of this project began when the clients – Rashmi and Pavan Kumat, became aware of Parekh’s distinctive style, approached them to transform their spacious abode. Avant-garde, quirky, quintessentially American/European, retro, fusion – the possibilities seemed endless. After the rounds of discussion between the architects and the clients, ‘Aurum’ is a harmony of styles where life imitates art in design. The guiding principles of the design were simplicity, honesty, and aesthetics.

The result is an interior that mirrors its occupants- stylish, clutter-free, trendy, meticulously planned, yet always on the move. Says Nilay, “When we started this project, the clients were working from home. This is a large house with a pool that was replaced with a garden. The clients are busy and they travel often, so maintenance would have been a problem. We did a deep study of their lifestyle, their hobbies, how they spend leisure time, what they bring back as souvenirs from their travels, do they have pets, etc.”
Delving deeper, we find that the interior is a tapestry of various styles, seamlessly woven together. Each element, from the flooring to the walls, the ceiling, the lighting, and the furniture, forms a layer that complements the previous one. Like a well-curated fashion ensemble, each piece harmonizes with the next. Take, for instance, the common areas. The vaulted ceiling in the long passage complements the light fixtures, while the wall panelling harmonizes with the framed photos. The onion pink furniture effortlessly syncs with the marble, mirrors, veneer panelling on the wall, and the glossy marble flooring. In the lobby and terrace, the result is an elegant ambiance that needs no artifacts to assert its place.
One might wonder how to avoid overkill in such a spacious home. Nidhi explains, “The clients – Rashmi and Pavan, themselves are well aware of home trends, fashion, etc. They wanted elegant and plush furniture, and we made sure the home fully echoes this. If one goes room by room, each is different with its own distinct theme, but the common areas – living and dining – share a common design language.”
Living Room: This expansive space welcomes natural light from two adjacent sides, creating an atmosphere of sheer luxury and style. The designers envisioned it as a regal hall, relying on the lightness of materials to exude opulence. With couches seemingly floating on Italian marble and a casually scattered rug, this hall prioritizes peace and calm without sacrificing opulence. Layers of design are evident here, from the backdrop of the television unit and ceiling patterns to the arrangement of different light fittings, including intriguing accent lights on the ceiling.
Dining: Simple, classy, and generous, the dining area mirrors the theme effectively employed in the living room. Handcrafted mirror panelling reflects the surrounding landscape, while a chandelier enhances the view of the lush greenery from all sides.
Kitchen: The kitchen boasts a Parisian charm with its light sea-blue palette, delicate ceramic pendant lamps, a breakfast table, and light-coloured grain flooring. Natural light bathes the kitchen in refreshing minty freshness.
Puja Room: With its own pristine effect achieved through the laser cut screens, the puja area is an all-white Oasis of serenity.
Guest Room: This versatile room doubles as a ‘work from home’ space and guest bedroom with a leather sofa cum bed. The softness of the exquisite ‘rose’ mural adds flavour to an otherwise straight-lined contemporary design characterized by shades of grey and warm gold.
Master Bedroom: Opulence reigns supreme in the master bedroom, thanks to meticulous panelling, delicate mouldings, and the fine work synonymous with European salon design.
Son’s Bedroom: A combination of grunge and pop aesthetics defines the son’s bedroom. Exposed bricks, concrete effect finishing, wood, metal, graffiti and motifs on the wall with iconography of the son’s favourite. The room is youthful and exuberant.
Ar. Nilay Parekh beautifully sums up the design philosophy, “Most of the things are handcrafted here. A little bit of man-made imperfection is always more beautiful than the perfection of machines.” In conclusion, the collaboration between Ar. Nilay and Ar. Nidhi Parekh and their clients resulted in an interior design that seamlessly blended various styles reflecting the occupants’ personalities and lifestyles. Their meticulous attention to details, layering approach and commitment to simplicity and elegance created a home where life truly imitates art and vice a versa. It’s a testament to the transformative power of a thoughtful and personalized interior design.
