Our project in Hyderabad, has keen attention to functionality and has utmost space optimization. Aesthetic and welcoming, this 1000 sq.ft apartment truly reflects the tastes of its residents. When we first visited the site, it was an unorganized mess. We could clearly understand our client’s urgent need to renovate this 20 year old apartment. Their brief was simple – It is a small space for a family of 3, but each space should double up in its functionality to meet all their requirements as a family without compromising on aesthetics.

After understanding all their needs as a family, we brainstormed a floor plan that would best suit their requirements, getting rid of some walls to create more openness and better circulation of air and light throughout the apartment.
The most challenging part was to add an additional guest room. Seeing the layout, there wasno scope for adding an additional room at all. Also being socially active they needed a space where they could comfortably host 20-30 guests for family and friends gatherings.
To overcome both these challenges, we created a space that could double up as a Sitout/ Guest Room/ Bar and at the same time act as an extension to the living room. This is the most interesting part of the house and it’s crazy how this space became everyone’s favorite at once.
As shown in the plan above, when used as a guest room, the sliding cum folding door can be closed and the sitout becomes a cozy guest room. When needed to host a large gathering, the sliding and folding door can be opened and pushed towards the wall, the sit out area becomes an extended part of the living room. To make it more seamless, we have used the same color palette and paneling in both areas.
For the TV unit, we got a relatively small wall which was not looking in proportion to the seatingand space. To overcome this, we planned a puja unit in the adjacent corner which extended the TV wallpaneling making it look seamless and more proportionate.
The open reading corner Also acts as a foyer and a quick meeting space for someone who need not enter the living area.
We opened up the kitchen to make it more modern and give a feel of openness and make the layout more spacious. We made the fridge go on the opposite side with a high counter so that it covers up the space making a perfect kitchen triangle and also we do not need to block the space with a wall or partition.
Not wanting a typical layout, we opted for a neutral palette and a bed sandwiched with wardrobes to make their space relevant for years and to accommodate any additional guests that may come.
We gave him a pullout bed and a chic study table with a display of his favorite cartoons to complete this space. This room also leads to a balcony which has janitor storage and additional storage requirements that the family may have.
On understanding their requirements and lifestyle, we realized it would be better to give the client a more spacious room and a space where they can enjoy and unwind. So we decided the break the balcony and bring it in.
Also, there was a small pantry in the original layout, we reduced the pantry and added dressing and storage. We changed the washroom entry giving it from the dressing rather than from the room.
Last but not least, Washrooms – Both the washrooms are elegant and designed with ample storage which gives a clean look to the space.
