  • 3 Different Pathways to a Career in Construction

Regardless of where you live, chances are you’re near a construction site. The industry is booming, especially after being slowed down during the pandemic. Plus, there is always a demand for qualified workers, so job opportunities are almost always available.

Not to mention that a career in construction can help you travel the world since you can jump from one project to another. Plus, your experience and expertise increase in value over time, which can bring new earning opportunities at different stages of life.

And, it’s not even that difficult to get your career in construction started. If you’re looking for ways to get started, here are the most common pathways to try:

Take a Short, Fully Funded Training Course

You don’t need a college degree to get started in construction. However, you do need the basic skills and knowledge to stay safe on a construction site and know how to do even the simplest tasks.

Luckily, there are lots of options out there, like this 20-day construction training program. These are intensive training programs that teach you everything you need to know to get started and find the career path you want to take in construction.

While you won’t be entering the field in a high-level position, this type of program opens a lot of doors in the field of construction. Just by knowing the basics and identifying the path you want to follow, you have a bit of a boost that can take you through the ranks at an accelerated rhythm.

    Find an Apprenticeship

If you like to learn by doing, an apprenticeship is a perfect opportunity to set your construction career in motion. Apprenticeships are special programs that allow career seekers to learn while working in the field of their choice.

Plus, you get paid while learning, so it’s perfect for people who don’t want to (or can’t afford to) take a student loan. Also, there are different levels of apprenticeship, so you can enter at the level that fits your skills and knowledge.

The good thing about apprenticeships is that it allows you to earn an education and get hands-on experience in construction without going out of pocket.

Everything is paid for by the company offering the program, so all you have to do is show up, pay attention, and learn. And while it’s true that the programs are intensive, it is a great way to start earning right after finishing high school.

    Higher Education

It may take a bit longer to find the best construction career path for your skills and plans, and higher education can give you the time and space to get there. You have a couple of great options, among which we like to highlight community colleges and universities.

Community colleges offer two years associate degree programs in construction management or architectural design. On the other hand, universities offer bachelor’s degrees in a wide range of construction-related programs such as architecture, engineering, real estate development, construction management, and more.

Higher education is often the longest route, but it also allows you to develop specific skills for the field that piqued your interest. Plus, many higher education programs open some doors for their students when it comes to practical experience and finding a job once they graduate.

    More than Just Construction

A career in construction helps you develop a series of skills that are easily transferable to a different industry. For instance, many construction workers with some experience on their shoulders make the jump from construction to project management.

This mostly applies to laborers who have worked and led teams, supervised construction projects, and can work in high-pressure situations.

But this is not the only pathway. You can also become a general contractor, a developer, a real estate broker, or transition to the tech industry (with a bit of learning). Overall, construction workers who climb the ladder manage to develop valuable skills that will be extremely useful later in life.
