  • What Designers Should Know Before Specifying Furniture From Foshan

A drawing can specify a sofa down to the millimeter. What it cannot control is what happens between the factory floor and the client’s living room. For designers who source furniture from China, that gap is where budgets slip and schedules stretch.

Foshan, in China’s Guangdong province, is one of the country’s main furniture-making and trading centers, and it keeps showing up on FF&E schedules for good reason. This article covers what makes the city useful for designers, where specifications tend to go wrong, and how to build a process that protects the design intent.

Why Foshan is on so many spec sheets

Foshan is not one market. It is a set of production clusters, each with its own strengths:

    • Longjiang: sofa and upholstery factories
    • Lecong: large trading malls and showrooms for finished furniture
    • Gaoming: solid-wood workshops and a growing outdoor furniture cluster
    • Dongguan (nearby): OEM and ODM factories that supply global brands

For a designer, this means stock pieces, semi-custom work and fully custom development can often be reviewed in the same trip, or within the same project.

    Where specifications drift

Most problems are not about bad factories. They come from small gaps that nobody owned.

    • Finish drift. Two suppliers can read “walnut” very differently. Without a signed-off sample, the match is a guess.
    • Dimension errors. Custom sofas in particular should be measured against the drawing before upholstery goes on.
    • Uneven schedules. Showroom stock may be ready in weeks, while a custom frame takes much longer.
    • Packaging built for trucks, not ships. Domestic factory packing rarely survives weeks at sea. Stone, glass and lacquered pieces need crating.
    • Mixed labels. Eight suppliers can mean eight labeling systems, which slows room-by-room installation.

Treat Foshan furniture sourcing as a managed process

Projects that run smoothly usually have one thing in common: someone owns the gaps between suppliers. Good Foshan furniture sourcing puts a local team between the designer and the factories. That team compares quotes, confirms specifications in writing, follows production, checks goods on arrival, and consolidates everything into a single shipment.

This matters most on multi-supplier projects. A living room might involve an upholstery factory, a stone specialist and lighting from a showroom. Each delivers on its own date to one warehouse, where quantities are counted, finishes are checked against approved samples, and cartons are relabeled by room and SKU. The designer receives one packing list instead of eight.

    A practical checklist for designers

    1. Put every spec in writing: dimensions, materials, finish and quantity.
    2. Approve physical samples of finishes and fabrics before production starts.
    3. Request two or three quotes per line, compared on price, material and lead time.
    4. Define QC scope up front: what is checked, how many units, and what the report covers.
    5. Plan export packing for anything fragile.
    6. Use packed CBM, not catalog CBM, when choosing between LCL and a full container. As a rule of thumb, a full container tends to become cheaper from roughly 15 cubic meters of packed furniture.
    7. Agree on a cut-off date, so one late piece does not hold the whole project.

Visit in person or work remotely

Designers who can travel benefit from seeing materials first-hand, and a pre-planned route keeps a Foshan trip focused on suppliers worth meeting. Those who cannot travel can still run a project from photos, video calls and samples, as long as the written spec and the QC steps are firm.

    The takeaway

Foshan offers range and customization that are hard to find elsewhere. The advantage only holds if the specification survives the journey. Written specs, signed-off samples, defined inspections and consolidated shipping are what carry design intent from the drawing to the room.
