EKAA is a testament to how thoughtful landscape design can breathe new life into overlooked urban corners. Perched atop a residence in the heart of the city, this terrace garden transforms a modestly sized space into a layered and sensorial green escape, an everyday luxury rooted in simplicity, restraint, and intent.
Editor’s Note: EKAA, designed by Kiasma Studio, is a sensorial green escape; luxury rooted in simplicity and intent. It is a multifunctional yet serene retreat, where plantings and water features across spaces create a rich, multi-sensory experience. An organic fabric weaves the built form with natural rhythms.
This Terrace Garden Is A Layered Sensorial Escape Rooted In Simplicity | Kiasma Studio
The design began with a clear brief: the client sought a refuge where they could begin their day with a cup of coffee, host intimate gatherings, read, or simply enjoy moments of solitude under the open sky. Responding to this, the space was envisioned as a multi-functional yet serene retreat that merges the architectural language of the home with nature.
A striking pergola, inspired by the building’s elevation lines, becomes the structural heart of the space. Its roof, a bold yet warm juxtaposition of corten steel and custom-designed wooden rafters, creates an ever-changing shadow play, particularly in the morning hours. These filtered light patterns infuse the terrace with rhythm and warmth, making the space come alive from sunrise to sunset.
The designers created the planting as a multi-sensory experience. They carefully chose fragrant flowering trees, trailing creepers, and edible species like bananas to stimulate not just the eye, but also the senses of smell, sound, and touch. As the leaves rustle, petals bloom, and fruit ripens, the terrace evolves through the seasons, quietly marking the passage of time.
A bespoke water feature introduces the gentle, meditative sound of flowing water, drawing inspiration from rejuvenation spas. This soft soundscape is complemented by a custom-crafted bench, functional yet sculptural, that invites curiosity and pause. The floor, made using site-cast microtopping, is tactile and monolithic, tying all elements together in seamless harmony.
At Kiasma, landscape is not an afterthought. It is an extension of life, culture, and climate—an organic fabric that weaves built form with natural rhythms. We believe in designing with restraint, allowing silence, stillness, and simplicity to shape the experience. Our spaces are minimal in gesture but deep in meaning—each one didactic, memorable, and rooted in its context.
EKAA is a quiet but powerful reminder of what’s possible when design honours its surroundings. A small terrace becomes not just a garden, but a place of ritual, reflection, and reconnection—proof that the smallest spaces often hold the greatest potential.
