  • This Rental Bungalow Stands Out from the Rest in the Gated Society | Nika Design Studio

We were approached by Vinay and Ekta to design their newly purchased bungalow for rental purposes in Lonavala. The design brief was simple: to create a property that stands out from the rest in the gated society. They wanted a refreshing and tropical look for their bungalow.

All bungalows within the gated society have identical layouts and facades, with the living room opening towards the internal road, a centrally located clubhouse, and a plunge pool in the backyard. We broke down the facade to create beautiful arched windows to break the monotonous look of the bungalows in the vicinity. The living room has been converted into a cosy theatre room with a comfortable lounger and sofa bed to accommodate extra guests.

Editor’s Note: “This Lonavala adobe is crafted into a sanctuary of tropical elegance from a uniform canvas. Arched windows grace the facade with timeless charm, while a cozy theater and open kitchen foster intimate gatherings. The plunge pool and Shahabad stone evoke rustic luxury, blending aesthetic splendor with sustainable grace.” ~Shagun Shah

    Warm and Rustic Look

The bungalow has a plunge pool in the backyard. The pool is an absolute highlight for any rental bungalow; hence, we decided to convert the pool-facing bedroom and kitchen into a living space with an open kitchen/pantry concept to encourage more communication and bonding between individuals. We used Shahabad stone for the poolside seating area to create a rustic and warm look.

We broke down the existing flooring of the entire bungalow and installed low-maintenance full-body tiles. The main entrance of the bungalow opens into the theatre room, where weary clients drop off their luggage to be taken to their rooms. From there, they can make their way to the comfort of the living room to unwind. The design of the living room is quaint and earthy, with a pop of colour added through the upholstery. We custom-made the furniture according to the designs and treated the upholstery with a chemical agent to repel water and dust, increasing its longevity.

We have used a uniform dholpur wall texture throughout the space to add character and depth. The living room also accommodates an open pantry and kitchen with a counter that provides the perfect space for a quick snack or a makeshift bar counter.

The ground floor also houses the theatre room, where one can lounge back and enjoy their favourite shows or movies. This room is multipurpose and houses a sofa bed that seamlessly converts to accommodate extra guests.

    Texture Play

A darker grey shade of dholpur texture runs through the room with ambient lighting. An aesthetically lit staircase leads to the first floor.

The first floor accommodates the master bedroom and another guest room. The master bedroom or suite room has an elaborate wooden bed with teal upholstery and rattan side tables.

    Minimal and Decluttered

The room has an appealing corner with arched artwork, a sofa bed, and a striking rattan pendant light completely customised as per our space and size. We designed minimal open wardrobe spaces to declutter the space.

The guest bedroom has a marvellous rattan bed that adds a lot of warmth, backed by a scenic tropical wallpaper that adds a lot of character to the room. We installed a customised concrete-finished suspended light above the side table to accentuate the space.

Located on the second floor, the terrace has provisions to accommodate solar panels on the roof to make the bungalow energy efficient and sustainable. Light wooden-tone outdoor furniture provides the perfect spot for a captivating conversation and pretty sundowners. The objective while designing this budget-friendly rental villa was to use materials that are low-maintenance without compromising on the overall design and aesthetic of the space.
