  • This Baroda House Brings Together Contemporary and Ethnic | JIHAN ASSOCIATES

In this Baroda house project, we bring together a blend of two seemingly different styles – contemporary and ethnic – to create a unique and visually stunning space bathed in understated luxury.

Interior design is all about creating spaces that reflect the individuality and style of the homeowner. The client Yashwant bhai Shah came to us with the expectation of making this Baroda house which not only caters to their needs but also becomes a reflection of their lifestyle and values. He trusted our vision to fulfill his family’s wishes and not once did they interfere in the design process. We designed each and every space of this Baroda house according to their requirements and all the minute details were given equal importance. The outcome was a home filled with warmth in contemporary style with glimpses of their culture blended with the design.

Editor’s Note: “Embracing the elements of contemporary and ethnic designs, this residence in Vadodara boasts a commanding facade with expansive windows and massing. A blend of earthy aesthetic and subtle greys evokes a timeless appeal for the abode. The interiors are a fusion of luxury and comfort with balanced aesthetics and modern sophistication.” ~ Simran Khare

This Baroda House Brings Together Contemporary and Ethnic | JIHAN ASSOCIATES

    Exterior

The exterior elevation of this Baroda house presents a striking contemporary design, characterized by its use of brick cladding, dynamic pergolas, and varied cuboid massing. The brick cladding, applied across the façade, features a mix of earthy tones and textures that provide a sophisticated, timeless appeal. The bricks, arranged in a classic pattern, offer a subtle contrast to the sleek lines and shapes of the Baroda house’s design.

    baroda house

The massing of this Baroda house is defined by a series of cuboid volumes that intersect and overlap, creating a dynamic and multi-dimensional appearance. These distinct cuboid forms vary in size and projection, adding visual interest and depth to the elevation. The interplay between the different volumes creates a sense of architectural movement and modernity, making the house stand out with its bold and innovative design.

Large, expansive windows are strategically placed within the cuboid volumes, allowing natural light to flood the interior spaces while offering views of the surrounding landscape. The windows, framed in sleek, modern materials, create a striking contrast with the textured brick cladding, highlighting the contemporary nature of the design.

This private residence has 3 storeys. The ground floor has an entrance foyer, living room, dining area, kitchen, parents’ bedroom, master bedroom and puja room. Stairs and a lift connect the consecutive floors. The first floor of this Baroda house consists of a family sitting and three more bedrooms. The second floor has a home theatre and terrace with a gazebo.

    baroda house

    Entrance

The main door of the Baroda house makes a striking statement with its unique combination of materials and intricate design. The door features a contemporary design characterized by vertical strips of wood and brass, creating a visually engaging pattern. The wooden panels provide a warm, natural texture, while the brass elements add a touch of modern elegance and sophistication.

The interplay between the warm wood and the sleek brass creates a dynamic, contrasting effect that captures attention. This jali features a series of vertical lines, meticulously cut into the brass plate. The design incorporates a lotus motif, intricately carved or etched into the brass, adding an element of traditional craftsmanship to the modern aesthetic. The lotus motif, symbolizing purity and beauty, is both elegant and meaningful, enhancing the door’s visual appeal and adding a layer of cultural significance.

    Entrance Foyer

The entrance foyer of this Baroda house is a sophisticated and inviting space, thoughtfully designed to make a memorable first impression. The focal point of the foyer is a striking feature wall that combines elements of warmth and elegance. At its centre, a beautifully crafted wooden arch draws attention with its classic yet contemporary design. Wood and brass strips adorn the arch, creating a rich, textured look that contrasts beautifully with the surrounding elements. The wood offers a natural warmth, while the brass adds a touch of refined elegance.

    baroda house

Exposed brick cladding encircles the arch, introducing a rugged, textured element that enhances the visual depth of the space. The combination of the smooth wooden arch and the rough brick cladding creates a dynamic contrast, adding both sophistication and a touch of rustic charm to the foyer.

    baroda house

Beneath the arch, a custom-designed wooden console stands as a centerpiece, showcasing a polished surface and clean lines that harmonize with the arch’s design. On the console sits a revered idol of Lord Ganesh, positioned with care and reverence. The idol adds a spiritual and personal touch to the foyer, welcoming guests with its auspicious presence.

    Living room

Our goal was to create a contemporary living room that incorporates ethnic elements in a harmonious and tasteful way. We started by selecting a neutral color palette of whites, beiges, and grays as the base, allowing us to incorporate bold, ethnic accents without overwhelming the space.

Next, we added ethnic-inspired textiles, such as patterned throw pillows and a woven area rug, to bring i a touch of traditional charm. To complement these elements, we selected contemporary furniture pieces with clean lines, such as a sleek white sofa and a glass coffee table.

    baroda house

The focal point of the room in this Baroda house is a stunning, hand-carved wooden console table, which serves as both a functional piece of furniture and a work of art. The intricate design and rich, warm tones add a touch of ethnic elegance to the space, while the contemporary shape ensures it fits seamlessly with the overall aesthetic.

    baroda house

Finally, we rounded out the space with a collection of ethnic-inspired artwork and accessories, such as colorful vases, intricate lanterns, and hand-painted wall hangings. These elements add a unique touch of personality and bring the space to life.

The end result is a living room that is both contemporary and cozy, and showcases the homeowner’s love of both traditional and modern styles. It’s a space that perfectly balances comfort and style, and truly reflects the individuality of the homeowner.

    Dining

Creating a well-designed dining area is about balancing aesthetics, comfort, and functionality. When I approached this dining space, I aimed to craft an environment that encourages gathering and conversation while exuding elegance.

    baroda house

The focal point is a custom, solid wood dining table, featuring a live edge to maintain a touch of nature’s raw beauty. Surrounding it, I chose upholstered chairs in a rich, jungle green colour, which adds a luxurious texture and a pop of color against the neutral palette of the walls. The chairs’ ergonomic design ensures comfort, inviting guests to linger longer.

    Kitchen

The modular kitchen seamlessly combines functionality and elegance, reflecting modern sophistication. Every element is meticulously crafted to optimize space and enhance usability.

    baroda house

The Matt finished cabinetry, in a harmonious blend of ivory and soft grey, offers ample storage while exuding contemporary charm. Sleek, handle less doors contribute to a streamlined appearance, complemented by state-of-the-art, integrated appliances that promise both efficiency and style.

    Puja Room

The puja room embodies serenity and spiritual elegance, with every detail curated to enhance the sanctity of the space. The design features gracefully curved walls, creating a cocoon-like sanctuary that invites peace and introspection. Soft, ambient lighting highlights the divine elements, casting a gentle, ethereal glow that enriches the room’s tranquil ambience.

    Master Bedroom

The master bedroom exudes elegance and tranquility, highlighted by a textured feature wall that adds depth and character. Highlighting this wall is a striking lotus cutout, meticulously crafted from a sheet of mild steel (MS), symbolizing serenity.

    baroda house

The wooden bed back, with its rich, warm tones, complements the room’s natural aesthetic, providing a perfect blend of modern design and traditional elements. Soft, ambient lighting enhances the intricate lotus details, creating a soothing focal point. Luxurious fabrics and plush furnishings complete the space, making it a sophisticated and peaceful retreat within the home.

Master bathroom is a luxurious haven, enveloped in elegant travertine stone. Its warm, earthy hues create a soothing ambiance, while the sleek, polished surfaces add a touch of refinement. A spacious walk-in shower and minimalist fixtures complete the design, offering a perfect blend of modern luxury and timeless elegance.

    baroda house

    Parent’s Bedroom

This bedroom has natural wood as the primary material. The walls are painted in a soft, neutral shade like off-white or light beige, creating a serene backdrop. The wooden two-post bed in ethnic style serves as the room’s focal point. The wooden paneling above the bed features a traditional pattern inspired by Indian design.

The overall ambiance of the room is tranquil and inviting, with a perfect balance between the natural warmth of the wood and the lightness of the color palette, all brought together by the rich, ethnic-inspired details.

    baroda house

This luxurious bathroom, designed with black Italian stone as its centrepiece, exudes sophistication. The stone’s deep black hue, accentuated by its natural veining, offers a striking contrast to the crisp white accessories that adorn the space. The designers conceptualize this bathroom as a perfect balance of contrast and harmony, blending luxury, style, and modern comfort.

    First Floor

    Lobby Area

The lobby area leading to the first floor has a feature wall in vibrant blue hue and adorned with a minimalistic console and mural frames, making it a focal point of the lobby area.

    baroda house

    Family Sitting

The family sitting is a place in the home where the family spends time together for multiple activities. May it be unwinding in the evening after a day full of work or having a get-together with friends, this place serves as a perfect setting.

The designers choose earthy materials to impart a warm and soothing ambience to the space. The custom feature wall made of Kota stone highlights the room. The low-height seating gives an ethnic touch to the otherwise contemporary design. The printed curtains and cushions add character to the whole space.

    Son’s Bedroom

This stylish bedroom masterfully combines rustic warmth with modern elements, creating a space that is both inviting and visually striking. The focal point of the room is a stunning mustard-colored brick wall behind the bed, which adds texture and a rich, earthy tone to the overall design. The bricks, with their slightly weathered appearance, bring a sense of history and character, making the room feel cozy yet chic.

Positioned against this textured wall is a sleek metal bed back, designed with clean, contemporary lines. The bed back finished in matte black or dark bronze, offers a bold contrast to the warm bricks, enhancing the room’s dynamic aesthetic. Subtle lighting behind the bed back casts a soft, ambient glow, highlighting the brick’s texture and adding depth to the room. This backlit feature not only highlights the wall’s natural beauty but also creates a cosy, inviting atmosphere perfect for winding down.

Complementing the industrial elegance of the metal bed back is a selection of natural ash wood furniture, chosen for its timeless appeal and warm, organic tones. Decorative touches are minimal yet thoughtful, adding personality without overwhelming the space. The room is bathed in natural light during the day. This is because of the large windows dressed in sheer, light curtains that allow the sunlight to filter in gently.

    Balcony

This charming attached terrace of this Baroda house offers a perfect outdoor retreat, seamlessly extending the living space of your home. The terrace is adorned with a lush artificial lawn. Thus, providing a vibrant green carpet that remains pristine year-round without the maintenance demands of natural grass. The lawn adds a fresh, natural feel to the area. Moreover, creating a soft and inviting surface underfoot that’s perfect for barefoot strolls or lounging.

At the heart of the terrace is a stylish outdoor seating area, featuring a set of comfortable chairs and a coordinating table. The designers craft the chairs from weather-resistant materials, ensuring both comfort and durability. Thus, ensuring they stand up to the elements while maintaining their sleek appearance. To enhance the terrace’s inviting atmosphere, plants are placed strategically around the space. Thereby bringing additional greenery and a touch of nature.

This luxurious attached bathroom marries the rich, earthy tones of dark brown Italian stone with the light, elegant touch of ash wood. Thus, creating a space that is both opulent and serene. The dark brown Italian stone covers the walls and floor. Thus enveloping the room in a deep, warm hue that exudes sophistication. The stone’s natural veining adds visual interest and depth, lending the space a timeless, organic beauty. The wood’s smooth, matte finish adds a contemporary touch. Meanwhile, the vanity’s clean lines and minimalist design keep the space feeling open and uncluttered.

    Daughter’s Bedroom

This white minimalist bedroom embodies the essence of serene simplicity and modern elegance. The room is a calming retreat, defined by its clean lines, uncluttered space, and restrained colour palette. The walls are painted in a pastel shade of light grey. Thus creating a fresh and airy atmosphere that makes the room feel spacious and inviting.

The focal point of the bedroom is a stunning grey upholstered wall panelling behind the bed. Thus, adding a touch of softness and texture to the minimalist design. Natural light floods the space through large, unobstructed windows, further enhancing the room’s bright and open feel. The decor is kept to an absolute minimum, in keeping with the room’s minimalist ethos.

This elegant bathroom, crafted in luxurious Statuario stone, epitomizes refined minimalism and timeless sophistication. Statuario marble adorns the walls and floors with its pristine white background and distinctive grey veining that flows gracefully throughout the space. The natural patterns of the stone create shapes, adding a sense of movement and depth. Thus creating an atmosphere of serene luxury.

Central to the bathroom’s design is a striking dark grey basin. Additionally, the vanity cabinet provides a bold contrast to the bright white marble. The cabinet, finished in a matte or satin texture, exudes modern elegance while offering ample storage space. Its clean lines and minimalist hardware keep the design cohesive, allowing the Statuario marble to remain the focal point.

    Guest Bedroom

This versatile guest bedroom cum workspace strikes the perfect balance between comfort and functionality. Thus blending the natural warmth of white oak wood with refreshing green accents. Designed with a focus on both relaxation and productivity, the room offers a serene, multi-purpose space ideal for accommodating guests. Meanwhile also serves as a stylish home office.

The walls are painted in a soft, neutral tone, creating a calming backdrop that allows the room’s natural wood and green elements to shine. On my side of the room is the minimalistic storage bed made in white oak wood. On the opposite side of the bed, a sleek white oak desk in a corner serves as the workspace.

The desk, with its minimalist design, offers ample surface area for a laptop, books, and other work essentials. A modern desk chair, upholstered in a soft grey fabric, complements the room’s natural palette. Meanwhile, ensuring comfort during long working hours. Above the desk, cabinets made from white oak provide additional storage and display space for books, plants, or decorative items.

To enhance the room’s refreshing ambience, green elements are incorporated throughout along with soft pastel-shaded decor elements. Moreover, the decor is kept simple and cohesive, with a few carefully selected pieces that reflect the room’s dual purpose.

    Second Floor

    Home Theatre

This home theatre is a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort. Thus creating an immersive entertainment space that is as stylish as it is functional. The walls, made of rough tumbled bricks, provide a textured, industrial backdrop that instantly sets a cosy, inviting tone. Moreover, at the heart of the room is a plush tan sofa bed, offering both comfort and versatility. The sofa, upholstered in soft, durable fabric, is spacious enough for lounging during movie marathons and easily converts into a bed. Thus, making the room ideal for guests. Its warm tan colour complements the brick walls, creating a harmonious palette of earthy tones. This enhances the room’s cosy atmosphere.

Enhancing the acoustics of the space, printed fabric panels with a musical theme are strategically placed around the room. These panels, featuring designs such as musical notes, quotes, and posters of famous cinema artists, not only serve as sound absorbers but also add a touch of personality and artistic flair to the space.

The lighting in the home theatre is carefully considered, with dimmable recessed lights providing soft, ambient illumination that can be adjusted to suit the mood. For the ultimate viewing experience, a large, high-definition screen is mounted on one wall, framed by the rough brick and acoustic panels, creating a cinematic focal point. Surround sound speakers are discreetly integrated into the design. Thus, ensuring that the audio is as immersive as the visuals.

    Terrace Gazebo

This charming gazebo on the terrace offers a stylish and comfortable retreat, blending outdoor relaxation with a touch of elegant design. The gazebo’s structure, likely crafted from wood or metal with a classic, open framework, provides a sheltered space that invites relaxation while allowing you to enjoy the surrounding views.

The floor of the gazebo is adorned with blue motif tiles, which add a vibrant, artistic touch to the space. The tiles, featuring intricate patterns in varying shades of blue, create a visually striking contrast against the neutral tones of the gazebo’s structure. Their geometric design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the overall ambience. Moreover, bringing a hint of Mediterranean flair to the terrace.

    Serene and Stylish

Inside the gazebo, a plush outdoor sofa and a set of matching chairs provide ample seating for guests. A coffee table, situated in the centre of the seating area, is perfect for holding drinks, snacks, or decorative accents. To enhance the gazebo’s comfort, soft, ambient lighting is incorporated. The plants surrounding the terrace bring natural freshness to the whole setting. Thus, providing a serene and stylish outdoor retreat where you can relax, entertain guests, or simply enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
