Traffic Segregation: Develop designated zones for various types of vehicular traffic, including parking areas, drop-off and pick-up bays, auto stands, state transport bus stops, and lay-bys. This will streamline the movement of vehicles and minimize congestion.
Clear Signage: Implement intuitive signage to guide drivers and passengers efficiently through the precinct.
Drop-Off and Pick-Up Areas: Create well-defined spaces for passenger drop-off and pick-up, ensuring safety and convenience. Incorporate clear markings and barriers where necessary.
Waiting Areas: Design comfortable and sheltered waiting areas with ample seating, amenities like charging stations, and information kiosks.
Entrance Gateway: Design an inviting entrance gateway that serves as a warm welcome and farewell to passengers. Integrate traditional architectural elements to reflect local heritage.
Canopy Design: Construct a covered canopy that provides protection from the weather while complementing the station’s overall aesthetic. Use natural light and open spaces to create a welcoming environment.
Local Identity: Reflect the local environment and culture through the use of traditional materials and motifs. Incorporate local artisan sculptures and handcrafted furniture into the public spaces.
Mini Park: Develop a mini park with a children’s play area to serve both waiting passengers and local residents. Ensure the park features engaging play equipment and green spaces.
Urban Space: Utilize landscape design to create a vibrant urban space that integrates with the local community, featuring traditional architectural styles and elements.
Tourist Information: Set up information displays providing details about local attractions and the Sindhudurg region to assist incoming tourists.
Local Artistry: Integrate local traditions into the design, including wall paintings and other art forms that reflect the region’s cultural heritage.
Screen Wall: The main design vision is to transform the existing station by introducing a new screen wall that serves both functional and aesthetic purposes. This screen wall will be a striking feature that complements and enhances the current station building, while reflecting the unique design characteristics of the local environment.
Precinct Entrance Gateway: The entrance gate is a bold representation of the station’s identity and name, ensuring that passengers immediately sense their arrival at a significant and welcoming location. Its design is both prominent and grand, creating a striking visual impact while maintaining a harmonious balance with the surrounding environment. The gate’s impressive scale and thoughtful design underscore the importance of the station, enhancing the overall experience for travellers.
Traditional architectural design elements: Incorporate the Konkan traditional sloping Mangalore roof design, laterite stone arches, to create a distinctive and culturally resonant entrance. This design element pays homage to local architecture and provides a unique welcome.
Local Traditions Wall Paintings: Include traditional wall paintings throughout the precinct to enrich the visual experience and celebrate local artistic traditions.
Maintaining Operational Efficiency: Constructing the new precinct while keeping the existing station fully functional posed a significant challenge.
Temporary Solutions: Developing temporary drop-off and pick-up points to ensure continued accessibility and convenience for users.
Service Diversions: Managing the diversion of services to accommodate construction and development activities.
Relocation of Facilities: Shifting parking areas and auto stand points to maintain functionality and service availability.
Preserving Landscape: Designing the new development around existing trees and landscaping to minimize environmental impact and maintain aesthetic continuity.
The Konkan Railway Station Precinct Development project aims to transform the existing stations into vibrant, functional, and culturally significant spaces. By integrating local architectural elements, providing modern amenities, and creating engaging public spaces, the project will enhance the travel experience for passengers and foster a stronger connection with the Sindhudurg region’s heritage and community.
