‘Tandem House’ Celebrates Classic Interior Design Styles | The Melange Studio

Tandem House is a treat to legacy, modernism, dramatic contrasts, and expressions through classic interior design styles. Located in the residential enclave of Ashok Vihar, New Delhi, Tandem House is a project that beautifully balances tradition and modernism. It is designed for a joint family consisting of two brothers and their independent families. Spanning over 22,000 square feet, this residence serves as a contemporary ode to the joint family system. It provides not only functional independence through separate duplex floors but also fosters communal living with shared spaces such as a gym, home theatre, and terrace garden. It symbolizes the family’s desire to remain connected while embracing modern ways of living. A home that is as much about legacy as it is about individual and collective expression.

Editor’s Note: “Tandem House beautifully combines history with modernity, creating a living masterpiece for a joint family in New Delhi. This 22,000 sq. ft. house is a perfect balance of classical interior design styles—it has personal areas, on one side, and common areas, on the other. A thoughtful plan, sustainable practices, and handcrafted details reflect the family’s values, creating a home that respects tradition while considering the future.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

Concept and Design Philosophy

The inspiration for Tandem House stemmed from the family’s previous home, built 20 years ago, where Indian furniture, textiles, and classical details were prominent. The challenge lay in reinventing this traditional aesthetic for a contemporary setting while maintaining a sense of nostalgia and familiarity. Classical elements became a metaphor for timelessness, reflecting the home’s multigenerational occupants.

Breaking the mold of typical builder-designed homes in the area, the façade stands tall. It echoes the grandeur of a classical-style bungalow. Surrounded by lush peepal trees, the design invokes the wisdom of the past while incorporating modern comforts. The façade not only reflects the family’s history but also serves as a symbol of their enduring values.

The design draws upon Vitruvian principles of proportion, creating spaces that are formally balanced and visually appealing. Colors and textures were chosen with emotional resonance in mind. With public spaces evoking feelings of calm and intimacy, private areas allowed for more personal expression. For example, the family living room consists of a dramatic forest-green color palette and bold patterns. It creates a space for deep conversation and connection, while the formal living room’s neutral tones foster serenity and sophistication.

The Architecture: A Marriage of Form and Function

The architecture of Tandem House is a careful interplay of functional planning and aesthetic beauty. Each family is given two floors, with the layout of both duplexes identical. Within each duplex, the two levels are interconnected by an internal staircase leading from a double-height living room. It symbolizes the visual bridge between the two generations. The older on the lower floors of each duplex, the younger on the upper ones. Public spaces, such as the master bedroom, living, and dining areas, are located on the lower levels. The upper floors host the children’s private lounges and bedrooms.

Spatial planning was key to maintaining a balance between interaction and privacy. The shared basement houses entertainment spaces, including a home theatre and golf room. The roof terrace accommodates an outdoor barbecue and green terraces. The design of flow between spaces is seamless, allowing natural light to permeate the interiors. Moreover, cross-ventilation ensured a constant breeze—particularly important in New Delhi’s climate.

Sustainability was another critical consideration. The project incorporated solar panels and eco-friendly materials, such as bamboo flooring and engineered wood, without compromising on luxury. Local craftsmanship played a central role in sourcing materials, with custom rugs created by artisans from Bhadohi and solid ash wood panelling handcrafted to suit the home’s aesthetic.

Design Execution and Challenges

A collaborative approach marks the design process. It involves direct engagement with family members for personalized spaces such as bedrooms and private lounges. Private areas reflect each individual’s personality but the overarching theme of classical modernism tied the house together.

One of the major challenges was the rapid pace of construction, with design and building occurring simultaneously. Many decisions were made on-site rather than through drawn plans. However, the result was a more intuitive, organic process that allowed for real-time adjustments. For instance, the decision to create the double-height living room came after witnessing the site’s natural beauty, including the majestic peepal trees, which framed the view perfectly from the living room.

In addition, architectural innovations such as the creation of skylights on the upper floors brought in abundant natural light, making spaces like the central dining area, which had no direct windows, feel open and airy. The use of exterior texture paint on interior basement walls also added an extra waterproofing layer, proving that functional solutions can also be aesthetic.

Interiors: Classical Meets Contemporary

Inside Tandem House, the interiors tell their own stories. The formal living room, a double-height space with sophisticated materials and monotone furnishings, exudes calm and elegance. The soft hues and clean lines create a serene environment, contrasting with the more intimate family living space, where bold patterns and dramatic animal prints encourage vulnerability and deeper emotional connections.

The family library, with its fireplace and built-in bookshelves, becomes a focal point for gathering, adding warmth and intellectual depth to the space. The bedrooms are personalized sanctuaries, each designed to complement the individual user’s tastes. In the master bedroom, for instance, the bed from the family’s old house was refurbished, symbolizing continuity and honoring the enduring emotional attachment.

Bathrooms were treated as statements of luxury, with Italian marble laid out in intricate patterns, offering a sense of subtle grandeur that complemented the more understated bedrooms. The kitchen and dining areas, though practical, reflects a seamless flow in mind, connecting the various social spaces of the house.

Legacy and Timelessness

Tandem House is a project where design transcends mere aesthetics. It is a space designed to evolve with the family, accommodating their growing needs while staying rooted in tradition. The house represents not only a home but a legacy—one that the family hopes to pass on to future generations.

The client’s satisfaction was palpable, with the final design exceeding expectations. The emotional attachment to the home’s design—from the refurbished furniture to the nostalgic elements—ensured that it was not just a house, but a living, breathing space filled with memories, connections, and future possibilities.

Lessons and Reflections

Reflecting on the project, the importance of on-site decision-making and mock-ups became clear, as did the value of using local materials for long-term functionality. One of the key takeaways was the realization that nearly all spaces in a residence can enjoy natural sunlight and ventilation with the right planning. The choice of durable materials with aging in mind also proved critical, ensuring that the home remains low maintenance for years to come.

Tandem House stands as a testament to the fact that modern architecture can honor tradition while embracing the needs of contemporary living. Its design is as much about the spaces it creates as the emotions it evokes, making it a home built to last in every sense.
