Ar. Swati Mahajan, the founder of Conceptual Design Studio, shares her passion for art and design which has made design the crucial part of her life.

Conceptual Design Studio is an architecture and interior design studio situated in the city of Mumbai. The firm prioritizes user experience and the daily experience of the clients and not the mere aesthetics.

In this conversation with Ar. Swati Mahajan she reveals her journey into the world of architecture and design.

What is the story of your passion for design?

From the first stroke of a pencil, my passion for design ignited. Each line, curve, and color became a symphony of creativity, weaving tales of imagination into tangible form. Through endless hours of sketching and experimenting, I discovered the power of design. It evokes emotion, solve problems, and inspire change. With each project, my love for the design deepened, fueling an insatiable curiosity to explore new ideas and push boundaries. Design became not just a profession, but a way of life.

What pushed you to commence your own design studio?

The desire to translate passion into purpose led me to establish my own interior design studio. I yearned for creative freedom, the ability to craft spaces that resonate with individuals’, and the opportunity to bring dreams to life. Thus, I embarked on the journey to create a studio where imagination thrives.

Could you write in short about the philosophy you go with when designing a certain project?

My design philosophy centers on harmony, functionality, and storytelling. Every element must seamlessly blend to create a cohesive narrative that reflects the client’s essence and vision. I prioritize user experience, ensuring spaces not only look beautiful but also enhance well-being and enrich daily lives.

What is the inspiration behind your concept developments and design ideations?

Nature, culture, and human experiences inspire my design ideations. While designing – nature, rich diversified cultures and personal likes/ dislikes of an individual/ family is something which we consider. These inspirations infuse my concepts with depth, authenticity, and a timeless quality that resonates with people on a profound level.

With online platforms showcasing a variety of trends, how did you decide on your signature style amidst the ever changing trends?

I found my signature style by embracing experimentation, reflection, and authenticity. While staying informed about trends, I focused on what truly resonated with me and my clients. Through continuous refinement and staying true to my design principles, I cultivated a style that reflects my unique perspective and stands the test of time.

What values do you prioritize in your life and how do they reflect in your way of work?

I prioritize integrity, empathy, and excellence. These values guide my interactions with clients, contractors, and vendors, fostering trust and understanding. In my work, I strive for honesty, craftsmanship, and dedication, ensuring that every project reflects these values and enriches the lives of those it touches.

A Sneak Peek Into The Projects By Conceptual Design Studio

Could you share the story of a project which has truly challenged you go beyond your conventional style of design?

Currently we are working on two existing row houses. We are modifying the structural changes right from terrace level to ground level to a contemporary minimalistic home….which is quiet challenging & fun to be part of such wonderful project

With the technological advancements, which is the one tool you feel is a blessing to deal with design challenges?

3D Visualization software like Max, Sketchup has been a blessing, allowing me to immerse myself and clients in virtual environments, facilitating better understanding and decision-making throughout the design process.

What role do you think a well designed interior space has on the users mood and workability and how do you achieve it in your designs?

A well-designed interior space profoundly impacts mood and workability, fostering funtionality, comfort, productivity, and emotional well-being. I achieve this by carefully considering factors while designing the functional layout plans & also by keeping in mind use of appropriate materials, lighting, color, and texture to create environments that support specific functions and evoke desired emotions, ultimately enhancing the user experience.

Considering the wide range of materials available today, how do you choose the right material palette which aligns with your design language and the client aspirations?

I select materials based on their aesthetic appeal, functionality, sustainability, and alignment with the design vision and client’s preferences. By balancing these factors and conducting thorough research, I curate a material palette that not only enhances the design language but also meets the practical needs and aspirations of the client.

Apart from designing, which are other hobbies that inspire you to keep going?

Drawing, coloring, playing badminton & travelling to new destinations.

Which aspect of interior designing brings you the sense of fulfilment ?

Creating spaces that deeply resonate with clients and positively impact their lives brings me the greatest fulfillment. Witnessing how my designs enhance their well-being, functionality, and happiness is immensely rewarding, reinforcing my passion for interior design and inspiring me to continue crafting meaningful environments.

Looking ahead in the future, what are some of the commitments to yourself to help you grow as an individual?

To continually grow, I commit to embracing learning opportunities, cultivating empathy and understanding, nurturing creativity, fostering resilience in the face of challenges, and prioritizing personal well-being and balance.
