Rohit Dhote Architects is an architecture and interior design studio based in Nagpur, India. The firm operates with a philosophy rooted in contemporary innovation. Their approach blends modern materials with traditional techniques, striving to achieve unique and sustainable architectural solutions.
In this conversation, Rohit Dhote reveals his journey as an architect into the world of interior and design.
Art has captivated me since childhood, fueling a lifelong passion that naturally evolved into a deep interest in design. Over time, I realized that I could channel my love for art into something tangible and impactful in daily life. This realization led me to pursue a career in architecture and interior design, where I can blend my creative passion with the practical task of shaping meaningful, functional, and inspiring spaces.
I have always dreamed of running my own design firm, driven by a desire for creative freedom in both design and project execution. In early 2022, personal circumstances brought me back to my hometown, Nagpur, from Mumbai, where I had been working as a junior architect at a reputable firm. The transition was challenging. But during this time, I was approached by my first client—an opportunity that felt like the perfect moment to take a leap of faith. One thing led to another, and at 25, I made the bold decision to start my own practice.
I am deeply committed to honesty and transparency in my work. I strive for these values to be reflected in my designs. My focus is on crafting spaces that feel unconventional yet effortless, blending innovative approaches with simplicity and minimalism. I prioritize creating environments that are spacious, breathable, and optimized for natural light and ventilation. Additionally, I carefully select materials that add warmth and create a harmonious visual balance.
I am always on the lookout for innovative ideas, which has sharpened my observational skills. Whether it’s from a book, magazine, or online publication, I study architectural and interior design projects from all sources—big firms or smaller studios alike. This practice allows me to interpret these works in my own unique way, inspiring new strategies for my own projects. Additionally, I draw a great deal of inspiration from various design disciplines such as product design, furniture design, and even automobile design.
As a young firm, we are still in the process of developing a distinctive design style. However, I strongly believe in incorporating unconventional elements that not only complement but significantly elevate the overall design. This approach is the foundation of our design philosophy, and as we continue to grow, I am confident it will evolve beautifully, helping us carve out a unique identity that sets us apart.
As an architect, the values I prioritize most in life are integrity, creativity, and balance. These principles deeply influence my work. Integrity is the foundation of everything I do, whether in my interactions with clients or the way I approach design. I believe in honest communication, transparency, and delivering work that aligns with both the client’s needs and my ethical standards.
Creativity drives my passion for architecture. I constantly seek new ways to approach design, aiming to create spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically inspiring. This value pushes me to innovate and experiment, ensuring that each project is unique and tailored to its context. Balance is equally important, both in life and design. This focus on balance allows me to craft designs that feel cohesive, sustainable, and in tune with their surroundings. These values—integrity, creativity, and balance—not only guide my personal life but are the core principles. Altogether, they shape the way I work as an architect.
A few months ago, we completed Zen Casa, a project that was both challenging and rewarding. Embracing a neoclassical design style, we stepped out of our usual approach, pushing ourselves creatively and technically. The real challenge lay in execution—custom-making every piece of furniture and turning designs into reality. As a young firm, we thrive on experimentation. We test material limits and improve teamwork with multiple agencies on-site, always focusing on refining every project aspect.
With technological advancements, numerous tools have emerged that have made our work as designers significantly more efficient. Personally, I find the combination of 3D software and new AI engines to be a game-changer. We can rapidly brainstorm and generate ideas using AI platforms like Mid Journey. Using 3D software, we visualize and experience a space before it’s built, allowing clients to see the final outcome and enabling us to refine the execution process with precision and efficiency.
A well-designed space seamlessly blends practicality with aesthetics, profoundly enhancing both mood and experience. In residential environments, a thoughtfully designed space fosters comfort and relaxation, ensuring that every aspect—from working in the kitchen to unwinding in the living area or resting in the bedroom—is enjoyable and functional. A well-crafted design helps residents feel at ease and fully engaged with their surroundings.
In commercial settings, effective design creates environments that are not only comfortable to work in but also inspire and motivate users. A well-designed workspace boosts morale, supports productivity, and stimulates creativity, all while avoiding any elements that could hinder efficiency. Rohit Dhote Architects prioritize creating spaces that are bright yet subtle, with abundant natural light and proper ventilation, which contribute to a vibrant yet serene atmosphere. By focusing on both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality, we aim to design environments where creativity and harmony can thrive effortlessly.
We engage in extensive discussions with our clients about their material choices and their functional requirements. Based on these in-depth conversations and our design concepts, we carefully select materials. Our selection process at Rohit Dhote Architects consider several factors: aesthetic appeal, durability, reliability, ease of use on-site, and cost. We regularly conduct thorough market research to stay updated on new materials and trends. Before integrating a new material into our projects, we request samples from our vendors and review live examples of completed projects that utilize the same materials. This ensures that our choices meet the highest standards and align with both our design vision and practical needs.
I used to play video games a lot, and though I play less frequently now, I’ve always been captivated by the 3D environments within these games. The large-scale, immersive worlds are visually stunning and serve as a playground for designers with vivid imaginations. From a design perspective, these games enhance creativity through interactive and observational experiences, continually inspiring and fueling one’s creative vision.
The look of sheer amazement and joy on a client’s face when they see their home fully transformed is incredibly rewarding. This fulfillment is a unique aspect of our field, rarely found in other professions. Additionally, having our work featured online, reaching a broad audience, fills us with gratitude and enriches our professional journey.
As an individual, I aspire to grow into an effective leader who sets a positive example for everyone connected with me, both personally and professionally. My goal is to support and uplift current team members while welcoming and nurturing future ones. Balancing work quantity, quality, and financial aspects is challenging for a young practice like ours. I am committed to refining our processes and overcoming these obstacles to improve our efficiency and success as an entrepreneur.
My ultimate goal is to help people around me understand and appreciate the depth and value of good design, as I believe it transcends mere aesthetics. I am dedicated to showcasing how thoughtful design can profoundly impact daily life and well-being. Additionally, I aspire to undertake international-level design projects in my hometown of Nagpur, which is rapidly emerging and growing.
By contributing high-quality infrastructure, I aim to enhance residents’ living experiences and inspire further development. I envision creating spaces that enrich lives, bring joy to the community. Additionally, spaces that foster a positive ripple effect for future generations.
