  • Rural Punjabi Roots Meet Contemporary Living At Sukoon In Mohali | tubb

Located where Mohali’s urban edge meets the village of Chunni Kalan, Sukoon occupies a 30′ by 75′ park-facing plot. The home is designed for a couple raised in a village and rooted in rural values. It brings together traditional Punjabi living and contemporary urban life.

A garden resting between the entrance gate and the front door slows one down from the street. The grass, plants, and newly planted mango trees beside the arjan tree frame it, while softly embedded bricks in the ground lead forward. The brick façade slowly curves inwards while the white chajjas project out, shading the wooden entrance door.

    Courtyard Baithak

Upon entering, the scale compresses at the black stone mosaic underfoot, directing towards the ambient light ahead. Alongside, a staircase leads to the upper level. The space ahead opens into a large double-height volume, the ‘baithak’ overlooking the courtyard, drawing from traditional Indian homes as the house’s primary collective space.

Three tall arches between the baithak and courtyard emphasize height and reminisce of tradition. The courtyard creates a sense of one’s own sky while cut-brick projections and jaali parapets cleverly introduce function embedded in ornamentation. When the spaces of the house orient towards the courtyard, they draw an experience of nature from it – the changing seasons, its colours, and a culture built around them; letting culture, not form, inform the design.

    Geometric Playfulness

The ground floor has one guest room and a detached toilet, common to the floor. The first floor has 2 bedrooms, a living space that is translated to a rear terrace, overlooking the courtyard. A sense of sculptural, geometric play interrupts the linearity. Circular windows on the façade, projecting windows into the courtyard and baithak, and circular openings within the staircase’s otherwise enclosed parapet overlooking the baithak, together offer a pause, yet remain connected within this thread of play. Stone-mosaic thresholds mark transitions, and the whole house maintains the playfulness found in traditional homes.

The studio reflects on light, material, and slowing down. How daylight moves across a surface, how construction meets textures, and how everyday nuances could be celebrated within a compact plan. Here, the columns were recessed slightly from the common wall to improve structural stability, reduce foundation costs, and make room for vertical slit windows to pour daylight across the textured wall surfaces.

    Skylights and Shade

This also allowed for horizontal skylights at points where the spaces meet the neighbouring wall, bringing daylight into the bedrooms and especially the toilets that enjoy curved skylights. Shaped by orientation and thermal comfort, the two bedrooms’ southwest-facing walls carry clerestory glazing and deeply inset windows to temper the full weight of the afternoon sun, adding a sense of distance and expanse to the sitting experience.

The design process looked at celebrating frugality and how traditional wisdom could return as an anchor to the house. It introduces a spatial pause for a more inward experience and thus aspires to ‘Sukoon’ (satisfaction).
