  • Openness In Structure And Spirit Is The Soul Of This Urban Home | Archemist Architects

Tucked into the calm, tree-lined lanes of Nagarbhavi in Bangalore, Avani Residence rises as a poetic response to the chaos of the city, a vertical sanctuary where light dances, materials breathe, and space unfolds in gentle rhythms. Designed by Archemist Architects for a family of four, the residence is a nuanced interplay between constraint and creativity, intimacy and openness, structure and spirit.

Openness In Structure And Spirit Is The Soul Of This Urban Home | Archemist Architects

LIGHT, VOLUME, AND THE ART OF VERTICAL LIVING

On a compact urban footprint, the architects sculpted a vertical home that defies its modest plot size, drawing the eye and the spirit upward, keeping openness in mind. Spatial connectivity was central to the design intent: floor plates are interconnected both visually and experientially, softened by natural light and enriched through seamless movement.

    openness

At the heart of the home lies a voluminous double-height living room, its soul, flooded with golden eastern light that washes over a dramatic 20-foot stone feature wall.

    WHERE ART MEETS ARCHITECTURE

The interiors are an ode to craftsmanship. The main living space opens into a flowing ensemble of living, dining, and kitchen areas. Here, art is not merely decoration, it is embedded into the bones of the space.

    openness

An intricate carved bone sandstone panel, inspired by peacock feathers and kissed with metal accents, catches light and casts poetic shadows, transforming the wall into a living artwork that evolves through the day.

    openness

Above the dining zone, a clay rope panel curves organically from wall to ceiling, subtly cloaking the powder room and utility doors while drawing the gaze upward, a tactile canopy of craft.

    openness

    POOJA SPACE

The adjacent pooja room, enveloped in sunlight from a skylight above, is enclosed in glass and grounded by a monolithic onyx backdrop, minimal, luminous, and reverent.

    openness

    ROOMS OF CHARACTER AND CONTRAST

On the same floor, a cosy bedroom embraces the southern sun with earthy hues reminiscent of a lingering sunset.

    openness

Upstairs, the second floor is home to the private quarters, maintaining the concept of openness of the house. Here, dual personalities emerge: the master suite sings in soft floral tones and pastel cabinetry, while the son’s room embraces a bold and structured identity, animated by a striking tropical wallpaper that becomes its centrepiece.

    openness

The third floor ascends into leisure, a secluded lounge crafted for repose and reflection. A custom bar unit anchors the space, which then opens onto a beautifully landscaped terrace. Koi fish circle serenely around a Buddha statue in water. The designers have nestled it among lush plantings, an urban oasis suspended above the city.

    openness

    MATERIALITY AS EMOTION

The material palette is warm and immersive. Rich wood tones, veined marbles, brushed brass, and artisanal surfaces create a multisensory experience. Key surfaces are animated by textures, stone cladding, handcrafted panels, and luxurious fabrics, each defining zones without rigid enclosures. The architecture allows materials to speak, surfaces to breathe, and light to choreograph quiet moments of beauty and openness.

    A LIVING, BREATHING HOME

Avani Residence is more than a house; it is a meditation on modern living. It responds to its constraints not with compromise, but with creativity. Every wall, every window, every turn of the stair is part of a quiet dialogue between form and feeling, structure and soul.

Rooted in Archemist Architects’ signature sensitivity to context and detail, the residence is a living narrative, evolving, expressive, and deeply personal.

In the dance of light and texture, volume and void, this home becomes what its name evokes: Avani, a serene haven rooted in earth, yet soaring gently toward the sky.
