Electronic music producer from Ahmedabad, Gujarat “NORTH AXIS PROJECT”, translating the architectural elements into a language of music. The spaces do have tales, unheard stories and tunes, with high emphasis on percussive oriental beats giving a unique texture of sound.
The North Axis Project aims to create music which contains elements of Indian classical / Arabic orient music in various forms and formats fusing with a really simple sort of European baselines highlighting the tradition and diverse culture of INDIA. The ideas behind the project were to create a movement and sensation that grooves the listener on earth and up above. The style of music is much inspired by early work of A.r Rehman and percussive patterns of Sivamani and indie artists like karsh kale, midival punditz
Exclusive Interview with Ar. Siddharth Bhayani ( North Axis Project )
Share hows your journey been till now as North Axis Project and the kind of music you guys do?
North axis project has quite an experimental sound and people who listen to fusion or folk fusion sort of have instant connection with us, the audience have been appreciative and kind enough to give us space to experiment in our set and the journey has begun. We tend to get tons of inspiration from the places we travel and places do have stories to tell, each space is connected to culture and instruments so when you observe the monumental / heritage spaces from an angle of an architect it is quite different- we understand the scale , history , proportion , material and art . A closer look to this beautiful spaces speaks about its past and we try to translate the vibe of the building into music through classic instruments like tabla, dhol , mridangam on percussion side and sitar, violin , rubab on the medley segment and create perfect blend with modern synth driven European basslines.
We love the experiment we do and certain VST & samplings allow us to enable the thought in a much versatile way . The idea is to introduce a variety of instruments in a much contemporary format. With a 90 min original playlist we are ready to tour.
Being an architect and a musician is not a common combination. How did music happen ?
Well, during our architecture school we have the opportunity to explore various art forms , and being a drummer from school days it wasn’t of a thought that I did pick drumming for a long time, initially playing in various college & festivals as an alternative rock band. Parallel electronic music explored as an early wave of DJ remixes hit the mainstream and found various genres like techno, psy trance , trance , house , synth wave etc formatting the sound went way back with mere an idea of combining architecture with music.
Gujarat is not per say known for its indie band scene. How are things right now ?
Sure, the indie music scene is struggling in Gujarat due lack of music culture and to be frank it’s a dry state after all , indeed there are great artists in the city finding the direction gradually the artist takes a commercial approach to sustain. Music festivals and college festival platforms are the only options to put out original music but the SCENE is struggling and one can not take music as a full time career without compromising the art.
Please tell us about your recent single Minar ?
Inspired by their trip to Turkey – Istanbul and observing the streets vibe, culture and the legendary buildings ‘ Hagia Sophia’ to ‘galata tower’. The track has various instruments like ‘OUD’ & Darbuka adding just the flavor, directing the track towards an Arabic orient music. And the name ‘MINAR’ as in minarets is an identity in islamic architecture and an element to spot the icon and stands tall denoting the landmark in historical context. The track is post recent releases such as “Matra and Haveli”.
‘The track is ethnic, groovy and vibrant’
