  • Childhood Takes Centre Stage Within The Inclusive Spaces Of My School | SpaceWell

Artius’ glued-laminated timber (glulam) technology integrates seamlessly into the architectural language of the home. As a carbon-negative material, glulam sequesters carbon during production while providing structural strength. Artius prefabricated the glulam sections with precision. The sections use ultra-durable, termite-resistant Yellow Cedar. They were then installed on site to create screens from thin, lightweight sections. The home follows the same sustainable approach. It is assembled like a Meccano kit using precast concrete columns, beams and slabs. This method keeps site disruption and material wastage to an absolute minimum.

    Designing Childhood

For us, this project was never just about designing interiors. It was about designing childhood. Children rarely remember school through lessons alone. What stays with them for a lifetime are the emotions attached to every space—the excitement of discovering a new book, the confidence of performing on stage, the curiosity sparked by technology, the friendships nurtured in shared moments, and the quiet experiences that shape who they become. Every corridor, every classroom, and every thoughtfully designed corner becomes a chapter in their story.

With this philosophy at its heart, every space within the school serves a distinct purpose. The spaces remain connected through a vibrant, child-centric design language. From the library and dance studio to the computer and robotics labs, café and temple, each environment inspires creativity and encourages exploration. The spaces also foster confidence and nurture a deep sense of belonging.

The Library_That Made Children Fall in Love with Reading Children rarely remember the first chapter they read, but they always remember where they fell in love with books.

    Inviting Reading Space

That thought became the starting point for designing this library. The aim was to create a space where reading feels like an adventure rather than an obligation between classes. Interiors can shape behaviour. When a space feels welcoming, inspiring and emotionally engaging, children do not need to be told to read. They naturally want to stay, explore and pick up a book.

    Playful Library Design

Instead of asking children to walk into a library, we wanted the library to invite them in. Curved bookshelves, playful arches and warm timber textures create a welcoming setting. Soft pastel tones and accents inspired by the school’s logo and uniform colours add a playful touch. The space feels more like exploration than education. Every turn reveals a new nook, while every shelf sparks curiosity. Each corner encourages children to pause, pick up a book and lose themselves in a story.

    Tree-Centred Reading

At the heart of the library stands a tree, surrounded by low-height seating where children can gather, read or simply pause for a while. Sitting beneath it brings a subtle connection with nature. It also adds a sense of calm, peace and comfort to the space. The tree becomes more than a seating area. It creates a peaceful retreat where stories feel more immersive and imaginations can wander a little further.

    Reading Nooks

Rather than filling the room with conventional tables and chairs, we created a series of unique reading niches that feel like little nests. Some invite children to curl up with a book, while others let them stretch out comfortably. Elevated platforms, accessed by a ladder, turn reading into a playful adventure. These intimate corners give every child a sense of comfort and belonging. They allow children to read without feeling like they are in a public space. Within moments, the outside world fades away, and they become completely absorbed in the story.

    Aesthetic Reading Café

Today, beautifully designed cafés and book bars have become destinations where people go not just for coffee, but for the experience of being in an inspiring space. We wanted children to experience that same feeling within their school. Why should they wait until adulthood to discover spaces that inspire them? This library offers children their own aesthetic café for books. It gives them a place to slow down, spend quality time and build a genuine relationship with reading.

Beyond enriching everyday school life, the café also welcomes parents, visitors and the community after school hours. This keeps the space vibrant and full of life. It becomes a place where books spark conversations and conversations build connections. The joy of reading can then extend beyond the boundaries of the school.

    Book-Inspired Entry

At the entrance, a bespoke seating installation inspired by the words “My School” creates a memorable feature. It establishes an immediate sense of identity and strengthens the emotional connection between students and their school.

A reception desk shaped like an open book complements the entrance. It warmly welcomes every visitor while reflecting the purpose of the space. It also serves as a reminder that every journey through the library begins by opening a book.

The library also embraces activities beyond reading through a multifunctional stage. The stage hosts storytelling sessions, teacher announcements, student performances and celebrations. This keeps the space active throughout the year. Floating above it, the illuminated words “Learn • Lead • Enjoy”, the school’s tagline, offer a daily reminder of the values the institution hopes every child will carry beyond these walls.

    Playful Reading Spaces

A reversible swing adds a playful touch and quickly becomes every student’s favourite corner. Along with the elevated reading platform, it reminds children that learning does not always have to happen at a desk. It can happen while swinging, exploring, imagining and smiling.

In today’s digital world, screens compete for every child’s attention. Interior design can make books feel irresistible again. This library shows how the right environment can transform reading from a habit into a cherished experience.

Because a well-designed library doesn’t just store books—it creates readers. And perhaps, years from now, these children won’t remember where every book was placed, but they’ll always remember how this space made them feel—and how it quietly taught them to fall in love with books.

Computer Lab & Robotics Lab_ Where Technology Meets Innovation

In today’s digital age, technology is no longer just a subject. It has become a way of thinking, creating and solving problems. The Computer Lab and Robotics Lab function as interconnected learning environments where students can explore, innovate and prepare for the future.

Each space serves a distinct purpose. Together, they create a seamless journey from digital literacy to hands-on technological innovation.

Inspired by the school’s visual identity, the design carries the institution’s branding through the thoughtful use of its logo colours. A vibrant blue carpet defines the central collaborative zone. The ceiling echoes the same colour palette, creating a striking visual statement that captures attention and strengthens the school’s identity.

At the heart of the Computer Lab, integrated planters introduce a refreshing connection to nature. They create a calm and soothing environment that helps students relax, improve concentration and reduce stress during extended learning sessions.

    Tech-Inspired Learning

Custom-designed wallpaper featuring the school’s name, complemented by graphics inspired by computer circuitry and CPU components, reinforces the technological theme while giving the space a distinctive character. Collaborative workstation islands encourage interaction, teamwork, and peer learning, transforming the lab into an engaging environment rather than a conventional computer classroom.

A transparent glass partition elegantly separates the Computer Lab from the Robotics Lab, maintaining visual connectivity while defining the unique identity of each space. This thoughtful transition symbolises the natural progression from learning digital fundamentals to applying them through innovation and experimentation.

    Robotics Learning Space

The Robotics Lab further extends this journey by providing students with a dedicated environment for STEM education, coding, and hands-on exploration. Spacious collaborative worktables encourage teamwork and experimentation, while custom linear ceiling lighting inspired by electronic circuit pathways strengthens the room’s technological identity. One of its most distinctive features is the handcrafted “ROBOTICS” installation, created using reclaimed machinery and mechanical components.

Beyond being an artistic feature, it symbolises the very essence of robotics—where individual parts come together to create intelligent systems. Complementing this concept is a custom-designed storage unit with laser-cut robot illustrations on every shutter, transforming a functional storage element into an engaging design feature that sparks curiosity and adds a playful character to the space.

    Future-Ready Learning

More than classrooms, these interconnected spaces were designed to cultivate curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and confidence. Here, students do not simply learn about technology—they experience it, question it, build it, and transform ideas into innovation. Every design element reflects the belief that learning is most powerful when students are encouraged to explore, experiment, collaborate, and imagine fearlessly. Together, the Computer Lab and Robotics Lab prepare young minds not just for the digital world of today, but for the limitless possibilities of tomorrow

Dance Room_ Designed to Inspire Every Step

Dance is one of the purest forms of expression, where movement becomes a language and confidence is built one step at a time. The vision for this dance room was to create a vibrant, inclusive environment that encourages creativity, celebrates self-expression, and nurtures discipline. More than a place for practice, this room was envisioned as a space where every child feels confident to learn, perform, and discover their unique potential.

The interior is defined by clean sightlines, warm natural materials, and carefully layered lighting, creating a setting that feels energetic during rehearsals yet calm enough for focused practice. Warm wooden flooring introduces a sense of comfort and elegance while providing a durable and safe surface for dance and movement-based activities. A customised illuminated ‘DANCE’ installation on the ceiling establishes a bold visual identity, creating an energetic ambience that immediately captivates young minds. At the centre of the far wall, a sequence of illuminated arches frames the school logo alongside the words “Tanzen ist Leben” (Dance is Life).

    Performing Arts Identity

Serving as a striking performance backdrop, the installation reinforces the school’s philosophy while adding depth, warmth, and a strong visual identity to the space. The layered lighting transforms an otherwise simple wall into a memorable interior focal point without overwhelming the room. Custom-designed graphics printed on the window curtains celebrate Ballet, Kathak, and Aerial Yoga, transforming functional window treatments into artistic features that inspire students while reflecting the diversity of performing arts. This thoughtful integration adds personality to the room while appreciating both Indian classical traditions and contemporary global movement forms.

Functionality was equally important in shaping the space. A full-height mirrored wall visually expands the room while enabling students to observe, refine, and perfect their posture and technique. Acoustically treated walls ensure excellent sound insulation, allowing music and rehearsals to take place without disturbing adjacent learning spaces. A dedicated Aerial Yoga section, equipped with suspended fabric hammocks, introduces children to an engaging practice that enhances flexibility, balance, coordination, and core strength while making fitness enjoyable and interactive.

Every element of this room was designed with one purpose—to create an environment where children feel inspired to move, express, and believe in themselves. Beyond choreography and performances, this dance room cultivates confidence, creativity, resilience, and teamwork. Years from now, students may not remember every routine they performed, but they will remember how this room made them feel—confident enough to step forward, expressive enough to be themselves, and inspired to keep moving

Temple_ Where Every Day Begins with Gratitude

A place where young minds find peace before they pursue their dreams, where every prayer becomes courage and every blessing quietly lights the path ahead. Amid the vibrant rhythm of school life, this temple was envisioned as a gentle sanctuary where students can pause, reflect, and begin each day with hope and gratitude.

Designed with a contemporary interpretation of traditional Indian architecture, the temple embraces serenity through simplicity and thoughtful craftsmanship. The focal point of the space is its customdesigned ceiling, inspired by the graceful form of blooming lotus and enhanced with warm integrated lighting that creates a soft, heavenly glow. Echoing this design language, a beautifully illuminated backdrop behind Lord Ganesha becomes the visual heart of the temple, where a handpainted lotus mural symbolises purity, wisdom, and new beginnings. Together, these carefully crafted elements create a harmonious composition that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Though intimate in scale, the temple holds a meaningful presence within the school. More than a place for prayer, it becomes a space where festivals are celebrated, gratitude is expressed, and values are quietly nurtured. In the midst of a child’s busy school day, this little sanctuary offers something equally important—a moment of calm before they step back into a world of learning, curiosity, and dreams.
