  • MĪNĀRA: An Ode To Traditional Handcraft Techniques

Towers have always served a variety of roles throughout history. Traditionally, they were integral components of fortifications, functioning as watchtowers or defensive strongholds. Many ancient civilizations and religions also incorporated towers into their sacred architecture. For example, the bell towers and steeples of Christian churches or the minaret Islamic mosques. Contemporary tower designs frequently include architectural features like observation decks, clock faces or communication antennas. As prominent vertical elements, towers contribute significantly to the architectural identity of cities and remain iconic symbols within both historical and modern landscapes.

    Minars

Minars, the Indian versions of towers that rise tall against the skyline, have long been the nation’s symbols of aspiration, devotion, and collective identity. Today, they remain relevant enduring cultural symbols, representing the historical, spiritual, and artistic legacy of architecture. The verticality of a minar conveys strength, stability and transcendence. While their intricate detailing reflects cultural artistry and craftsmanship.

    Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship has always been intrinsic to Indian design and architecture. Across regions and communities, artisans have evolved distinct techniques, patterns, and material sensibilities rooted in tradition and place. The authenticity, complexity and detailing seen in minar designs stand as enduring testaments to this legacy, giving rise to structures that are timeless. However, in today’s fast-paced world where speed and convenience often outweigh care and craft the value of such workmanship is diminishing. Preserving and supporting these craftsmen is essential, for their skills carry a cultural and artistic significance that transcends time.

    Mīnāra

Mīnāra, a collaborative work of Pramāna Design and Silpakara Design Studio is a handcrafted floor-standing lamp that seamlessly fuses technology with artisanal skill. The concept was inspired from towers. As prominent vertical elements, towers contribute significantly to the architectural identity of cities and remain iconic symbols within both historical and modern landscapes. Rooted in ancient architecture, they served not only as functional elements but act as visual anchors that defined the spirit of a place.

Mīnāra is a primarily handmade, floor-standing lamp. The cool, timeless elegance of marble lends structural stability and sophistication, while the warm, organic tones of teak add depth and natural texture. Delicate threadwork weaves across the piece, offering visual intricacy and tactile warmth. Blending ancient craftsmanship with modern innovation, Mīnāra symbolizes the harmony between heritage and contemporary design. It merges the minimalism of stone with the expressive warmth of wood and thread, creating a textural and conceptual dialogue that appeals to both the senses.
