Lit House sits within a 100 x 100 metre forest clearing in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. Its glass façade allows light to filter through from all sides, creating a constant dialogue between architecture, landscape, and atmosphere. Every space remains luminous throughout the day, shaped by shifting patterns of light and shadow.
Lit House Creates a Quiet Threshold Between the Stillness of Nature and Urban Life | Studio Archohm
The house maintains a sense of stillness within its spaces. At the same time, it allows for unencumbered spatial freedom. In contrast to the density and verticality of urban living, the house adopts a low, open and expansive form. It belongs neither entirely to the city nor the countryside, but lives in the space in between, a threshold that accommodates the noise of the city and the stillness of nature at the same time. It creates a place to pause without disconnecting.
The house brings together independent volumes through courtyards, gardens, and transitional spaces. Glass-lined edges dissolve boundaries between inside and outside. the absence of internal doors and staircases fosters uninterrupted movement. Light, proportion, and intent define the spaces rather than physical barriers.
Light plays a central role in shaping the experience of the house. it filters through vegetation, glass and fabric to create evolving patterns of shadow and tone. Every space within the house engages with natural light, reinforcing a sense of time and presence.The architectural language remains deliberately restrained. A flat concrete slab appears to float over transparent enclosures, eliminating visual clutter and emphasizing horizontality.
Structural elements remain concealed, allowing light, material, and landscape to take precedence. exposed concrete forms a continuous, tactile shell, complemented by expansive glass surfaces and warm wooden inserts in private areas. Services and systems are fully integrated and concealed, with radiant cooling and heating embedded within floors, ensuring that the spatial experience remains uninterrupted by mechanical elements.
The surrounding landscape is treated as an equal participant in the design. dense vegetation filters harsh sunlight, courtyards regulate the microclimate, and views extend into an uninterrupted forested setting. the house becomes a transparent receptacle, sheltering its inhabitants and immersing them in nature. Commissioned by a multi-generational family, the brief called for a balance between togetherness and individuality. With no fixed program or constraints, the design emerged from a field of possibility, shaping a structure that invites light and exists in continuity with its landscape.
The resulting residence reflects a broader shift in contemporary architectural thinking, away from permanence and prescriptive planning and toward adaptability, experimentation and deeply personal and personalisable spatial experiences.
The house is conceived as a series of interconnected volumes where shared spaces foster collective living and interaction, and quieter, more intimate zones allow for retreat and reflection, importantly, the design anticipates change. It is ready to respond to evolving family dynamics, technological advancements and future patterns of habitation, without compromising its essential spatial clarity.
