For adults, the bedroom is the room where you sleep and retreat to when you want to enjoy some peace. However, the bedroom is more than just a room for relaxation for kids; it’s their mini world. It is the place where they can foster their imagination and creativity. It’s also the place where they feel safe, secure, and comfortable.
When you’re angry or mad at your child, especially an adolescent or teen, you’ll notice that they will often run to their rooms and stay there until everything cools down.
How do you design a room that caters for all the needs of your child?
Select a fun theme
Kids can immerse themselves into an obsession and grow with it into their teen years and adulthood. You want to choose a theme that your child likes and is interested in pursuing it. Include the child in the selection process, and take into account the suggestions.
Indulge in your child’s interest and design a room that the child feels comfortable and enjoys inviting friends. For example, if your child is interested in football, you can design the room to look like a football stadium. Add prints on canvas of the child’s favorite football players or stadiums. If the child is interested in geography, a wallpaper of the world map with cities will help the child learn about the different countries and regions in the world.
Design the room to be fun by adding features that would help the child learn or grow physically, mentally and emotionally. You can buy or build a bed with a ladder and slide. You can also have a double-decker bed and attach a tent to the lower bed.
Embrace color psychology
The effect of colors on children varies; some colors cause excitement; others raise anxiety levels, or give inspiration. For example, if you have an active child, applying the energetic color red as the primary color in his/her room, the child might become overly active when in the room. In such a scenario, you’re better off using green, blue or purple.
The color green represents health, peace, and signs of a flourishing environment. It’s a relaxing color that would be ideal for a child’s or teenager’s room.
Make the room cozy
If our child is fascinated by wild animals, you can buy the child stuffed animals. To you, the stuffed animals are just toys, but to your child, the stuffed animals could be transitional objects. These objects are emotional support systems that help your child sleep when tired, feel reassured when he/she is alone or away from home.
These transitional objects are soft and cuddly, which is why kids love them. Keep this in mind, when designing your child’s room, you want the room to have several plush toys. In addition to the plush toys, you can also add soft bedding, rugs and family photos in the room. Sometimes seeing a familiar face is calming and relaxing.
Neighboring with Vibrance
Kids are into colors; you cannot deny. We have already told you how colors work on your child.
And combining his favorite colors in his furniture will make him more playful. Add a colorful table.A spiderman toddler bed for boys can make them feel secure. Just like that, a princess chair for girls can make her feel like she is the princess!
Nothing is better in supplying energy to your little one than the colorful upholsteries surrounding him! These make him feel at home.
Be flexible
Interests and preferences change, therefore be ready to change the design of the child’s room as he/she ages. For example, a four-year-old girl might be interested in dollhouses, but as she grows older, her taste might change. If you designed the room based on her interests, you’d have to redesign it to fit her new interests.
Renovating the room is a costly endeavor that you’ll have to endure every 3-5 years. However, you can use flexible furnishings to avoid this problem. Choose furnishing whose value will last even during your child’s teenage years. For example, when choosing wall murals, you can opt for something classic like a football player or a city’s skyline.
The children’s room is the one room in your home that is constantly evolving. You’ll need to strategize how you’ll design your child’s room and future proof it. For example, instead of buying a car bed or a twin-size bed, you can head straight to a full-size bed. However, if you have the time and resources, feel free to indulge in your child’s interests.
Toddlers need room to play, but as they grow, they need more storage space and seats for visiting kids. This is why you need to embrace flexibility to account for the changes as your child grows.
Wrapping up
Involve your child in the design and decoration of the room. Allow them to express their creativity by helping them choose a décor that expresses their interests and personality.
