Located in the heart of South Bangalore, this project envisioned a vibrant and engaging learning environment with fluid interiors for children aged 2 to 4 years.
Fluid Interiors and Vibrant Colours Embrace This New Design Language of A Learning Environment | Studio fivefold
The client’s brief called for a space that would encourage play, curiosity, and discovery. The design strongly emphasizes safety, replacing sharp corners with soft edges and gentle curves to create a tactile and welcoming environment.
The design reimagines freestanding columns as sculptural elements, while colour-accented highlight walls and translucent glass blocks introduce rhythm, vibrancy, and a sense of playfulness to the interiors.
The design began with a bare interior shell punctuated by a grid of eight freestanding columns, entirely detached from the exterior walls. Each column takes on a unique form: one sculpted as a circle, another as an ellipse, and some are partially embedded in walls.
The central column rises as a symbolic “tree,” anchoring the space and guiding the unfolding spatial narrative.
The designers introduced a curved glass block wall to structure the open-plan layout, gently dividing the area into two distinct yet visually connected zones. This wall became a signature element of the design — functioning not just as a spatial divider, but also as a playful, light-filtering surface that reflects the daycare’s vibrant colour palette and fluid interiors. Materiality played a key role in realising the concept.
The team fabricated sculptural, curved elements on-site as dry walls. They engineered the glass block wall with precision, using a concealed framework of rods within each block.
A vibrant yellow was introduced through painted surfaces on walls and ceilings, further accentuated by the colored reflections through the glass blocks and window grilles.
At every stage, the evolving needs of young children remained central to the design approach. More than just a functional learning space, the daycare is envisioned as a world built for children — where design nurtures imagination and every detail contribute to an unfolding story.
The result is a joyful, nurturing, and stimulating environment that seamlessly blends aesthetics, functionality, and child-centric design, offering young learners a dynamic foundation to explore, grow, and thrive.
