The Melody House, designed by Ar. Arpan Shah, is a residence designed for a Gujarati family whose lives are deeply intertwined with art and music. Located on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, the house draws inspiration from the spatial richness of the city’s traditional havelis while reinterpreting these principles through a contemporary architectural language.
At Melody House, Art, Music and Family Life Gather Around a Central Courtyard | Modo Designs
At the heart of the home lies a central courtyard, conceived as the primary organizing element. Echoing the courtyards of Ahmedabad’s historic residences. It serves as a vibrant social nucleus while extending seamlessly toward the western garden, blurring the boundaries between interior and landscape. The arrival sequence begins with a north-facing entrance foyer that transitions into a vestibule, gradually revealing the central courtyard and establishing a sense of openness and orientation.
The ground floor is organized into distinct east and west bays around the courtyard. The eastern wing accommodates the study, pooja room, dining area, and kitchen, creating a cohesive family zone, while the western wing houses the living room and master suite. An additional bedroom occupies the southern edge, completing the lower level.
Upstairs, the two sons’ bedrooms sit along the western side, each opening onto a private terrace overlooking the garden. The eastern wing contains an additional bedroom and a family lounge. Circulation wraps around the courtyard on three sides, allowing the upper level to remain visually and spatially connected to the home’s central void.
Materiality celebrates regional craftsmanship and a restrained palette. The architecture is expressed through a dual composition of terracotta lime-coated surfaces and exposed concrete, complemented by Kota stone flooring. Locally sourced furniture, artworks, and handcrafted elements reinforce the home’s connection to place, lending warmth and authenticity. Rooted in tradition yet distinctly contemporary, Melody House becomes a setting where architecture, art, music, and everyday family life are woven together around a shared central space.
