Editor’s Note: An another attempt to restore the depleting, AD Studio 9 has created spaces that are truly delightful in nature. Wicker textures are a comfortable and sound choice while the stairwell speaks elemental volumes. The murals are an element of surprise and the quaint balcony area is an inspiration. ~ Nishal Sevak
‘Mathrukrupa’ is located on a tiny plot measuring 25’x40’ along a narrow lane, in Ramamurthy Nagar, Bangalore. This project involved renovation of a 20 year old house, a quaint and simplistic design approach along with fringes of traditional materials and an inviting facade design. It is spread across two floors in load bearing structure. The client envisioned a home for a family of four, where they wanted to settle down. The attempt was to design a new space within a new set of requirements given by the client.

The new layout design was carefully planned over the existing foundation, to cause minimum alterations in the structure and the load bearing walls that stood on the existing foundation were kept intact.
Few new columns and beams (I Sections) were introduced to accommodate an additional bedroom and opening of internal staircase. Considering that the adjacent buildings are almost abut each other, the space has been planned carefully to tap light and ventilation in the house, throughout the day.
Ground floor houses the formal living; kitchen; pooja and a guest bedroom, while first floor comprises of informal living and kids & master bedroom.
The bedrooms though small, through careful space planning are comfortable and have enough space as well for integrated study area and wardrobes.
The kid’s bedroom on first floor opens to a balcony with a perforated brick wall, which while providing privacy and cool breeze, also creates an invigorating interlay of light and shadow across the day.
The staircase has been reintroduced in the central part of the house, which was previously located outside.
Presently, it acts not only as the core space of the house which visually connects the spaces across the floors, but also as a highlight feature with an overhead skylight with a beautiful double height light fixture.
It is also an emotive focus area, which was creatively hand painted to bring landscape in the house, which was otherwise a challenge due to constrained size of the property.
Despite the narrowness of the plot, the revised layout design neither compromises on the ingress, nor in privacy despite negligible setbacks from neighboring houses. The light touch minimalistic approach also finds expression in the overall interiors of the house- all designed to a minimal requirement.
This house showcases the power of purposeful spatial design and planning, to deliver functionality and charm, even in an inappreciably constrained plot.
