Located in the coastal village of Pererenan, Bali, House Terra is a contemporary response to tropical living, designed by Biombo Architects as a family retreat. The project balances built space and landscape, creating a strong connection between architecture and nature while offering shelter from the island’s monsoon climate.
Editor’s Note: “House Terra, more than a family retreat, is a statement on sustainable tropical living. Elevated by thoughtful design, the home thrives on gentle breeze, authentic characters, organic elements, and an effortless balance. This Bali house earns attention by celebrating a lifestyle rooted in nature and growing along with it.” ~ Anusha Sridhar
A Modern Bali House With Timeless Tropical Charm | Biombo Architects
The house, which spans 325 m², is designed with passive cooling strategies at its core. Deep overhangs and carefully designed roof structures provide shade and protection from heavy rains, reducing heat gain and allowing indoor spaces to remain cool throughout the day.
Natural ventilation is enhanced through cross-breezes, while open-air corridors and semi-outdoor living areas encourage an indoor-outdoor lifestyle without fully exposing the home to the elements.
Landscaping plays an active role in shaping the experience of the house, softening the transition between interior and exterior with native vegetation that enhances the microclimate.
Material selection reinforces this connection with the environment. Natural stone, ceramic floors, reclaimed wood ceilings, infused concrete bamboo, and stone mosaic feature walls create a textured, earthy palette that grounds the home in its tropical setting.
Locally sourced materials and craftsmanship bring authenticity and warmth to the design, ensuring a timeless and organic character.
By carefully balancing openness and protection, House Terra embraces the principles of biophilic design in a way that feels both intentional and effortless.
Rather than fully blending into its surroundings, the home finds a comfortable relationship with its environment. Further, it offers a sense of refuge while remaining engaged with the landscape that defines it.
