A Bright, Airy 4BHK Contemporary Home Enriched with Plenty of Ventilation | Design Matters
Visit : Design Matters
The client’s requirement was a bright, airy 4BHK contemporary home enriched with plenty of ventilation. The design brief was to maximize rooms facing east and north. The living, kitchen, dining & bedrooms needed to have a view of the garden. Terrace was meant to be designed as a space to unwind/get together with friends and family.
“Sunny side up!”
Editor’s note : Bangalore may give you a hard time on the road, but its weather compensates for it. The Nest is a celebration of this tropical savanna climate. With playful volumes, the bungalow with its east-facing windows offers nothing less than a quintessential way of living. Its neutral tones enhance the bright, characterful furnishings that play a mindful role in ensuring the livability of the space. Nature-inspired wall mouldings decorate the house, enhancing its airy-breezy and embracing persona.~ Venessa Thomas (Co-Editor)
There were multiple ideas and iterations done before arriving on the final design which met the client’s requirement. The central design intent was to locate the rooms towards the east and north for best lighting and view of the greenery and locate the toilets/vertical circulation areas towards the west and south which shields the interior from the harsh sun.
The elevation was inspired by the contemporary South East Asian architecture with clean straight lines and muted colour tones. The building has a concrete finish which is relieved by the wood finish pvc clad underside for the large balcony overhangs.
The Entry to the house was taken on the eastern side via a foyer flanked with a foot spa.
This is a unique element in the house as the client’s family has a ritual of washing their feet before entering the house.
The ground floor consists of pooja, home theatre and guest bedroom.
The actual house begins on the first floor. One arrives on first floor where the living, dining, kitchen and parents’ room is planned around a terrace garden looking to the eastern side which brings ample amount of morning light inside.
The living opens up to the terrace garden via large full height sliding folding door.
Unlike conventional kitchens, it has a large window facing the garden which maintains visual connectivity and can be opened to allow fresh breeze. The window also acts as breakfast counter in the terrace garden where one can enjoy breakfast and pleasant mornings sitting amidst greenery.
The Family room overlooking the double height living room and the bedroom bay window visually interconnects the two levels.
The first floor accommodates the family room which overlooks the living, the master bedroom and kid’s room. Both the rooms have large balconies facing the greenery towards east.
Both the kids’ room are provided with bay window towards the living for visual connectivity from the first and the second floor.
The terrace garden opening out from the living room by a large sliding folding door from Schueco. The double height living feature wall with a beautiful stone clad wall from celestile. There are flower elements in the mural which can be lit up.
The landscape terrace space with the sound of the waterfall, the in between spaces and the wooden seater facing the greenery.
The walk-In wardrobe and the toilets are placed towards the western and southern sides The terrace accommodates the home office with a balcony facing the greenery and a powder toilet.
Remaining space is a large landscaped terrace with two sections – A glass covered area which can be cordoned off with a retractable mosquito mesh and an open terrace area with wooden seaters. This creates covered/semi covered and open spaces for leisure and relaxation.
