All about Herringbone Flooring

As buildings grow more complex and builders choose a wider variety of materials to appeal to the aesthetic and utility values needed, floorings have emerged as a key area of concern. One of the most alluring but expensive types of flooring is herringbone flooring.

The pattern in the herringbone flooring is quite eye-catching and is created by using solid wood blocks, which are slightly smaller than other patterns currently in the market. With greater technological advancement, there have emerged more varieties of flooring patterns featuring dynamic sizes that some wealthy people have chosen to customize to make their home floorings even more unique.

Why Herringbone flooring is superior

Herringbone flooring is a class above other types of wooden flooring. Though wooden floorings typically have a classical look, the herringbone pattern is very difficult to replicate and that’s why few companies manufacture it. The pattern adds an extra flair of sophistication to the floors, which contributes to the chic finishing that homeowners go for.

The fact that the herringbone flooring is high class, means that it comes with a variety of added features to make your home even more alluring. Some installers and fitters recommend added veneer finishing making the flooring even more attractive. However, most suppliers will have pre-varnished and pre-waxed flooring options to make your floors immediately sparkly and captivating.

A flooring choice should provide lasting utility. Floors should not just be aesthetically pleasing; they should be practicable, long-lasting, and capable of maintaining comfortable heating/cooling to cater to weather fluctuations. The herringbone wooden floors are compatible with many heated floor technologies as they allow for easy circulation of air beneath the blocks and also fit in well.

Another added advantage of herringbone flooring is the fact that it allows for versatility and therefore can be paired with more contemporary wallpaper and roofing options. They have become a favourite option for interior designers because of their unique style which is difficult to copy.

Most qualified flooring experts can mix and match different block sizes and shapes to achieve more dynamic designs. Some of the most iconic holiday resorts and hotels use herringbone flooring to add an extra chic design.

Factors to Consider before Choosing Herringbone Flooring

Herringbone flooring requires large floors for its aesthetic appeal to come out. They are perfect for large areas where the eye-catching pattern brings out the overall design.

A good flooring designer will establish a great pattern that is visible from a higher vantage point. The higher the point of sight, the better certain designs look. This reason explains why hotels with large foyers opt for herringbone flooring because the intricate designs are visible right from the entrance, and depending on the design, can co-opt dining areas and other larger rooms.

The second major thing to consider before getting herringbone flooring is the budget. Normally, the flooring option doesn’t factor in the most expensive fixtures of a house, however, the herringbone option is more expensive than most other options since it requires a bit more preparation than other traditional wooden flooring options.

These extra preparations may cost upwards of $1.5 to $5 per square foot. These extra preparations include operations such as sanding, and sealing the wooden planks, aspects that most other traditional flooring options rarely include. These extra processes are what make herringbone flooring a premium flooring option and therefore they must be adequately factored into the overall budget.

Where Can I Find Herringbone Wood Floors?

Herringbone wood floors are readily available in major cities and industrial zones. With the advent of e-commerce, nearly every major retailer can now send orders to any address in the world, so long as the customer can cover the required fees. Due to certain intellectual property rights and licenses, some companies are allowed to use different names for the same types of wood flooring products.

These products are still herringbone wood floors but may come in different labels and brandings. A good installer should therefore be able to discern between different brands and know which ones are herringbone wood floors based on their sizes, colour, and species. It is common to find herringbone flooring branded or marketed as parquet flooring. This name finds its first use in 17th century France, where it was used in royal households.

Why the Herringbone Flooring remains a timeless choice

The herringbone flooring is a demonstration of class and opulence. The current industrialized world may have shifted from the classical appreciation of flooring, roofing, and wall designs in favour of more practical and industrial aesthetics.

However, in the 17th century, most wealthy households preferred herringbone flooring due to its scarcity and unique designs. The only other alternative was lino floors, which were less durable and didn’t give the same allure as the herringbone floor.

Real estate pricing valued parquet flooring in Versailles so much that a skilled installer would earn almost the same wages as a Lord. Over time, as classical architecture and interior design gave way to modern designs, certain appeals retained their timelessness due to their longevity and durability.

The herringbone flooring has stayed undisturbed in many palaces and this is why many modern homes prefer the flooring especially once it has been treated against humidity. It requires the least maintenance once it has been properly installed and this is where it derives its utility value. No matter how many years of use, the herringbone floor can simply be sanded to its bare surface and then refinished to retain its timeless appeal.

The herringbone floor requires infrequent waxing and is therefore the most preferred option in highly sensitive offices. Unlike other flooring options that easily fade and tear, the herringbone wooden floor will still retain its sheen as the refinishing will typically feature dustproof waxing and veneer coating.

Finally, any interior designer will advocate for a variety of shapes, colours, sizes, and shades to achieve the desired effect. Over time, wood, just like any other organic material will age, and most woods lose their appeal. However, the herringbone wood floor improves as it matures. This aging gives the floor a timeless and classical appeal.
