The housefly, also known as nuisance fly, is the most common fly found in and around the house. They are found everywhere people live and fly or crawl on anything especially feces, garbage and rotting organic material, making them a potential disease carrier. Houseflies if not controlled can form a large population in a short period because of their quick reproduction process. They should be gotten rid of to prevent contamination and infection. Here are some ways to get rid of houseflies in the house.
Herbs and flowers
Some herbs and flowers are known to keep files away from the house. The aroma of these herbs and flowers, such as hot pepper, lavender, marigold, bay leaves, and basil, irritate and repulse flies. These herbs and flowers can be planted around the house to get rid of and keep away flies from the house. All-natural fly repellent spray can also be made from these herbs.
Light traps
Light traps are boxes with an ultraviolet lamp in the back. The ultraviolet lamp attracts the flies and either kills them with an electric zap or traps them within the box. Light traps are very effective, and they attract not just houseflies, but all kinds of flies infect the house such as mosquitoes, wasps, etc. Light traps should not be mounted close to the entrance and windows to avoid attracting flies from outside and they should be positioned about 4 to 6 feet over the ground.
Oil repellent
Essential oil spray is another way to get rid of houseflies because they have a strong odour with irritates flies. Natural oils such as peppermint oil, clove oil, lemongrass oil, thyme oil, citronella oil and lavender mixed with rubbing alcohol or water can be used as a housefly repellent.
Vinegar and dish soap fly trap
Fermented or rotten fruits are known to attract fruit flies. This makes fermented fruit products, such as wine and apple cider vinegar good bait to lure flies. A simple trap can be made by mixing an inch of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap (to reduce the surface tension of the vinegar) in a glass jar. Cover the jar with a plastic sheet and secure it tightly with a rubber band. Create holes big enough for flies on the plastic sheet with a needle. The smell of the vinegar will attract the flies into the jar through the holes. The flies will sink in the jar because of the dish soap.
Flypaper trap
Flypapers are strips or ribbons with sweet-smelling, sticky glue overlaid on both sides. The sweet smell attracts the flies to the flypaper and the sticky glue traps them in. The flypaper can be hung or laid down around the house to get rid of houseflies. The flypaper trap isn’t as effective as other traps but can help reduce infestation. The glue can lace with insecticide to improve its effectiveness.
Conclusion
The presence of houseflies in the house if not controlled or gotten rid of puts one in health danger. Keeping the house flies free is a never-ending process but with the use of ultraviolet fly electric traps you can worry less about the presence of houseflies in your house.
