After the pandemic, more and more people picked up gardening. It is easy to understand why since this is a highly rewarding and fun hobby. However, you cannot simply jump into it and expect great results.
There are many things you have to be aware of and there is a huge difference between expert home tips about gardening and random advice you receive from someone without experience. Unfortunately, most of the data you find online is basic. With this in mind, start your knowledge gathering with the most common interior gardening mistakes you could make if you are interested in this.
It is so easy to overestimate the water some plants need. You might simply look at a plant and believe that daily watering is needed. With interior plants though, this is rarely the case. In most situations, especially in environments with moderate humidity, you just need to water your plants one to two times per week.
Always look at the soil and do use moistness as a way to determine if water is needed. Most of the popular interior plants have to be watered when the first inch of their soil becomes dry. However, do not use this rule for all plants. Just learn all you can about the plants and look online to learn exactly how often to water them.
In a similar fashion, remember that under watering is also a possibility.
This is a funny mistake but a very common one. You start filling the large container and then you realize it is very difficult to move. Soil can be very heavy and many underestimate this.
Since the container can be so difficult to move when filled with dirt, the best thing you can do is to first place it exactly where you want to place the plant. Then, you can easily fill it with the best possible soil, regardless of how much you need to add.
We often see indoor plants being placed in areas that will never receive as much light as necessary. This is a particularly big problem during the winter months because the light is not as intense.
Knowledge is very important here. Learn what the plants need and remember that there can be huge differences in terms of light needs between them.
There are not many things that are more disheartening than buying plants that are sick or weak. You would do all the right things and your plants would still die.
The best thing you can do is to buy your interior plants from reputable sellers. When you are short on cash, you are naturally tempted to visit the large chain stores since cheaper deals are available. However, in this case, stocks vary a lot in terms of quality. Also, staff knowledge tends to be general. Always examine plants as you buy them. Look for signs of sickly stems, wilting leaves, pests, and other issues that might be present.
