Despite the uncertainty surrounding the housing market in recent years, there are ways you can make your home more saleable. If you’ve been thinking of putting your home on the market, spring is still the best time. Not only does your home tend to look better in the springtime, thanks to warm sunlight hues, blooming flowers and lighter nights, if you’re selling a family home, the new owners could be moving in in time for the new school year in September. But, before you get the estate agents round to value your property, there are a few things you can do to get it in the best possible condition.
Declutter
Get a head start on your packing and start decluttering your home. Clutter isn’t just in the form of books you’ve read and don’t intend on reading again, or clothes that no longer fit, it’s also furniture that doesn’t seem to fit anywhere. Obvious contenders are side tables placed next to every chair, or that sentimental sideboard that’s just too big. If you really can’t bear to part with something, and you don’t have a friend or family member that wants to take it off your hands, you can always put items in storage.
Deep clean
Hire a professional cleaning company to do a deep clean on your home. They’ll tackle things like ovens, shower doors, and underneath sofas. All of which can make a huge difference to not only the aesthetic of the home, but the smell too – especially if you have pets. If you’ve already moved out of your home, consider hiring a cleaning company to stop by every couple of weeks to keep on top of things. When you do have viewings, a quick spray of polish in the living rooms, and a dash of Zoflora down the drains will help with any lingering odours.
Decorate
While it can be tempting to spend thousands on a new kitchen or bathroom suite if you think yours are looking outdated, with clever budgeting you can spend a fraction of that and still have a positive effect on your property’s value. Painting kitchen cupboards and updating handles are an easy fix that can have a big impact. Similarly, replacing shower curtains with a shower screen and painting tiles white will instantly create an updated modern look. If the décor throughout is to your personal taste, but might not appeal to the masses, you might want to consider painting walls a neutral colour. Warm whites with a hint of pink or blue will make your home appear modern and clean.
