There is a specific kind of tension involved in designing a contemporary home in India’s tier-2 cities. An architect is constantly negotiating the heavy, emotional pull of cultural tradition against the sleek, functional demands of modern living. In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, this architectural tightrope walk is further complicated by an unforgiving climate, where summer temperatures routinely shatter the 45°C mark.
It is exactly within this demanding context that KrishnAshray emerges, not merely as a built structure, but as an articulate response to its environment. Designed by Ar. Prashi Mittal and Ar. Akshay Rastogi of ARCHITREZ+, this recently completed 5,280 sq ft residence answers a critical question: how can a modern urban home respect its streetscape while fiercely protecting the soul within? Through a meticulous synthesis of passive climate control and profound spatial philosophy, the architects have manifested their project’s tagline into physical reality: “Ancient Shelter. Contemporary Craft. One Living Soul.”

Perhaps the most compelling narrative of KrishnAshray is its approach to Vastu Chetna—or spatial consciousness. In contemporary Indian architecture, Vastu is frequently reduced to a rigid checklist, resulting in compromised layouts disguised by nostalgic, pasted-on ornamentation. The design team at ARCHITREZ+ completely rejected this superficial application.
Instead, they returned to the elemental roots of the ancient science. They focused on orienting the spaces toward natural light, establishing a sacred energetic core, and utilizing raw, earth-derived materials to ground the structure. The result is an unambiguously Indian identity that doesn’t rely on historical mimicry. It is a home engineered for three generations, designed to elevate mundane domestic routines into mindful, experiential journeys that will age gracefully over decades.
Walking through KrishnAshray is an exercise in calibrated transitions. The architects have orchestrated a sequence that slowly unpeels the layers of privacy, pulling the inhabitant from the chaotic urban exterior into a tranquil sanctum.
The procession begins at the entry forecourt, leading you toward a heavy, tactile teak wood portal. The moment you cross this threshold, the spatial volume suddenly explodes upward into a double-height foyer. It is an architectural inhale—a moment of pause. From this towering visual node, the ground floor branches logically into a formal drawing room for receiving guests, a more intimate family living space, and a state-of-the-art modular kitchen. Anchoring this entire sequence is a thoughtfully placed Puja alcove, maintaining the spiritual equilibrium of the household.
As you ascend to the first floor, the narrative shifts from communal gathering to deep personal retreat. The master suite and supplementary bedrooms open outward onto a lush terrace garden. Here, a striking terracotta backdrop visually anchors the greenery, softening the hard edges of the built environment and pulling nature directly into the living quarters.
Yet, the undeniable protagonist of this interior journey is the central circulation core. The staircase here refuses to behave like a mere functional element. Featuring ethereal, floating white Calacatta marble treads and a minimalist glass balustrade warmed by a tactile teak handrail, it becomes a sculptural centerpiece. Hovering majestically above it in the double-height void is a bespoke gold disc art installation. Catching the shifting ambient light, this piece single-handedly transforms the foyer from a simple transit zone into an experiential gallery.
In a city like Bareilly, you cannot treat the sun as an afterthought; it must dictate the architecture. ARCHITREZ+ embraced this reality, turning passive cooling mechanisms into the defining visual characteristics of the home. They began by cleverly inverting the traditional Indian bungalow hierarchy. Rather than open ground floors and closed upper levels, KrishnAshray employs heavy, solid privacy walls on the ground level, reserving open, deeply shaded terraces for the upper volume.
The south facade is where the building performs its most vital climatic magic. A vast, handcrafted terracotta jaali screen, geometrically patterned, stretches across the elevation. Functionally, it acts as a robust solar filter, breaking down harsh radiation and drastically mitigating internal heat gain. Aesthetically, it pays homage to vernacular Indian craft while acting as a kinetic art installation, casting a mesmerizing, ever-shifting net of shadows across the interior floors throughout the day.
To further defend the structure, massive concrete overhangs cantilever outward by 1.2 to 1.5 meters, completely shielding the delicate first-floor glazing from direct sunlight. Inside, the double-height foyer goes to work as a thermal chimney. Utilizing the stack effect, it allows warm air to rise and exhaust through upper openings, naturally pulling cooler, fresh air through the lower living spaces.
The material matrix of KrishnAshray is an exercise in rigorous curation—a dialogue between rawness and refinement. Exposed concrete forms the primary structural shell, providing massive thermal capacity while establishing a bold, unapologetic aesthetic.
Against this brutalist canvas, the architects layered warmth. Teak wood, heavily featured in the entry and ceilings, offers incredible durability and a deep cultural resonance tied to traditional Indian interiors. The Calacatta marble flooring amplifies natural daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting while injecting timeless luxury.
The details are equally considered. Gold and brass inlays around door frames and custom shelving act as quiet symbols of divinity and opulence. Meanwhile, classic gypsum mouldings in the drawing room and parents’ quarters whisper of Euro-Indian colonial design history, adding a layer of sophisticated refinement to the raw concrete.
Beautifully documented through the lens of architectural photographer Harsh Nigam, KrishnAshray represents a mature, confident stride in modern Indian architecture.
Ar. Prashi Mittal and Ar. Akshay Rastogi haven’t simply designed a house; they have engineered a micro-climate. By allowing the environment to shape the structure and using Vastu as a tool for mindfulness rather than restriction, ARCHITREZ+ has delivered a deeply soulful, living sanctuary that stands as a benchmark for residential design in extreme climates.

Editor’s Note: Some places feel rooted because they belong to their surroundings rather than trying to stand apart from them. Coffee Sangam in Andhra Pradesh takes this approach through a raw, tactile palette of brick, stone, teak, and mild steel. The random rubble compound wall extends the landscape into the architecture, while the Corten steel […]

A Mock-up That Became a Home – For an architecture practice, a mock-up often helps test an idea before the team translates it into a larger project. It allows architects to work at full scale, examine materials and construction techniques, and understand their limitations. The process also gives them room to test different brick bonds and […]
