Editor’s Note: Some places feel rooted because they belong to their surroundings rather than trying to stand apart from them. Coffee Sangam in Andhra Pradesh takes this approach through a raw, tactile palette of brick, stone, teak, and mild steel. The random rubble compound wall extends the landscape into the architecture, while the Corten steel spiral staircase becomes a sculptural focal point against the exposed brick facade. Inside, teak fenestration and beveled glass blur the boundary between the restaurant and its green surroundings. Kadapa stone flooring, brass inlays, and a boat mural inspired by coastal life bring craft and local character into the dining experience. Even the pitched clay tile roof becomes part of the experience, with glass tiles filtering sunlight into shifting patterns of light and shadow. At ‘Coffee Sangam’, the architecture blends into its context rather than standing apart from it. The design uses local materials such as brick, stone, and mild steel for the facade. These materials bring an honest character and age naturally with the site. The random rubble masonry compound wall acts as more than a barrier. It extends the existing landscape and grounds the building within its terrain.
The design uses elements that belong to the site. The material palette remains deliberately raw and tactile. The main door uses solid teak wood with a custom brass pattern. This small detail brings craft to the forefront. The spiral staircase forms the statement element of the elevation. Made from Corten steel with a green marble base, it acts as a sculptural feature that anchors the facade. Soft pink textured paint complements the warmth of the exposed brick. It balances the rugged material palette with subtlety. Rooted, honest, and contextual, ‘Coffee Sangam’ feels modern while carrying the memories of the land it sits on.

The entrance creates an inviting arrival with two distinct entry points. The main entrance features a solid teak double door with a seamless brass pattern overlay. It opens directly into the outdoor seating area of Coffee Sangam, creating a warm and crafted welcome. The second entrance uses a delicate MS frame and leads to the spiral staircase and lift lobby. The design keeps this entry subtle so that the main door remains the centrepiece of the entrance.
The outdoor seating extends the landscape into the space. Monolithic bench seating sits between pockets of greenery, making plants part of the seating experience. At the heart of the space, a community table features a microcement finish with an embedded brass motif. This detail brings craft into a shared setting. At the far end, a small alcove sits slightly elevated from the rest of the outdoor seating. It creates an intimate pause and offers a quiet corner within the collective space.
The indoor seating features teak fenestration with beveled glass at the ends. This allows diners to enjoy views of the landscape while seated indoors, creating a seamless connection between the inside and outside. A boat mural anchors the centre of the space. It depicts the coastal life of Andhra Pradesh and reflects the local character of the cuisine served at the restaurant.
Kadapa stone covers the floor, with delicate brass inlays and an embedded uplighter that adds a soft glow. The seating is thoughtfully spaced to create a cosy setting for a relaxed dining experience.
At Coffee Sangam, the spiral staircase is not just a means of circulation, it is the statement piece of the elevation. Crafted in Corten steel, it brings a raw and earthy character that ages beautifully with time. Its rusted patina blends with the brick facade and the surrounding landscape. It stands as a sculpture and the base of the stairs is anchored in green marble, which grounds its lightness with weight and adds a subtle richness to the composition. The contrast of the industrial Corten with the natural stone is deliberate, rugged yet refined.
The exposed clay tiles at Coffee Sangam are not just for the aesthetics of the elevation but they are truly enjoyed from the indoor space as well. Glass tiles are carefully placed within the solid clay tiles, allowing sunlight to penetrate during the day and creating a beautiful play of light and shadow inside. The roof becomes an experience, not just a cover. The warm teak wood fenestration blends seamlessly with the pitched clay tile roof, bringing together two natural materials that have always belonged together in our traditional architecture.
