Editor’s Note: Some spaces are designed to disappear so that people, light, and movement can take centre stage. StillHouse in Agra transforms a 1,900 sq. ft content studio into a quiet architectural canvas where multiple visual settings unfold within one cohesive environment. A restrained monochromatic palette, textured plaster, warm fabrics, and muted finishes allow each space to adapt to different forms of visual production. Pergolas bring changing patterns of daylight and shadow across the surfaces, while fluid drapery adds softness and movement. Subtle references to Mughal and Mediterranean architecture appear through arches, layered stairways, courtyards, and textured walls, without becoming literal. As each setting reveals itself through framed views and gradual transitions, StillHouse becomes more than a production studio. The Stillhouse Turns Visual Production Into A Cohesive Architectural Experience In Agra | Studio Ikai
The Stillhouse is envisioned as more than a collection of individual sets. It treats visual production as a total spatial experience. The project brings together distinct visual atmospheres within a coherent architectural language. It feels as though multiple studio shoots unfold simultaneously under one roof.
The spatial narrative revolves around receding the architecture in order to foreground movement, texture and human presence. Rather than allowing the built form to dominate the experience, the architecture acts as a restrained framework. It allows light, performers, and the camera to move fluidly.
Movement through the studio is carefully orchestrated, allowing each setting to reveal itself progressively. The transition between spaces becomes as important as the spaces themselves. In this way, navigation through the project becomes an integral part of the visual-making process.
A restrained monochromatic palette establishes continuity across the entire studio while enabling each setup to emerge as a distinct spatial moment within the larger narrative. Light-textured plaster walls, muted finishes and warm fabrics deliberately underplay the architectural surfaces, allowing the focus to remain on the shifting qualities of light and occupation.
By offering an austere architectural backdrop, the spaces are able to absorb varying aesthetic requirements and content production styles without appearing overly prescriptive or thematically fixed. The intent was to create environments that remain open-ended and adaptable, capable of continuously transforming through styling, movement and use.
Daylight and temporality played a critical role throughout the design process. Fluid drapery introduces softness and motion against the heavier building masses and geometric forms, creating a subtle tension between permanence and ephemerality. These elements allow the spaces to feel continually active and responsive despite the stillness of the architecture itself.
References to Mughal and Mediterranean architectural traditions are subtly embedded within the project through layered stairways, arched openings, textured walls and intimate exterior courtyards. Rather than being treated as literal stylistic gestures, these references are abstracted into spatial experiences that lend depth, rhythm and familiarity to the limited footprint.
The interplay between interior and exterior spaces further reinforces this layered spatial quality, allowing the studio to unfold gradually through framed views, thresholds and moments of pause.
One of the primary challenges throughout the project was generating sufficient spatial diversity while maintaining visual consistency across the studio. Gentle transitions between different volumes and atmospheres further shape the experience.
Each setting functions as an independent architectural environment. Yet, each one remains seamlessly connected to the larger spatial narrative.
Our approach treats the spaces within The Stillhouse as active environments rather than passive backdrops. Instead, they operate as open-ended environments that continuously evolve in relation to shifting light, movement and occupation, allowing the architecture to participate actively in the process of visual creation.
