What Building Materials Best Survive England’s Heatwaves and Windstorms?

Many people picture their dream home as somewhere beautiful, spacious and filled with natural light. But as an architect, I see things a little differently. A truly great home isn’t just attractive—it needs to withstand whatever the British weather throws at it.

With England experiencing hotter summers, stronger windstorms and more unpredictable rainfall, designing resilient homes has become more important than ever. Whether you’re planning a self-build, renovating an older property or hoping to win a house, understanding which building materials offer the best protection can help you appreciate what makes a home stand the test of time.

Here’s my professional view on the materials I trust most when designing homes for England’s changing climate.

England’s Weather Is Changing – So Should Our Building Materials

For generations, British homes were designed primarily to keep occupants warm during long winters. Today, architects must also consider overheating, high winds, flash flooding and increasingly intense storms.

A modern dream home should comfortably handle:

  • Heatwaves exceeding 30°C
  • Powerful winter windstorms
  • Heavy rainfall
  • Moisture and condensation
  • Rising energy efficiency standards

Choosing the right materials isn’t simply about durability—it affects comfort, maintenance costs and how well a property performs for decades.

Brick Remains One of England’s Best Building Materials

If I had to recommend one external wall material for most homes in England, brick would still be at the top of my list.

Brick offers exceptional durability while requiring very little maintenance. More importantly, it has excellent thermal mass, meaning it absorbs heat during the day and slowly releases it overnight. This helps keep indoor temperatures more stable during summer heatwaves.

Brick cavity walls also perform extremely well during heavy rain and strong winds, making them one of the safest long-term investments for homeowners.

If your goal is to own or even win a house built to last, brick construction remains one of the strongest indicators of quality.

Timber Frame Homes Can Perform Exceptionally Well

Timber frame construction has grown significantly across the UK thanks to faster build times and impressive energy efficiency.

Some people worry about timber surviving England’s weather, but modern timber homes are engineered very differently from older wooden structures.

When designed correctly, timber frame homes include:

  • Breathable wall systems
  • High-performance insulation
  • Moisture barriers
  • Ventilated external cladding

These features help prevent damp while keeping homes warm in winter and cooler during summer.

The success of timber construction depends far more on quality design and workmanship than on the material itself.

Concrete Helps Keep Homes Cooler

Concrete is another material that’s becoming more valuable as summers continue to get hotter.

Like brick, concrete stores heat before releasing it slowly, reducing rapid temperature changes inside the home.

It also offers:

  • Excellent fire resistance
  • High wind resistance
  • Outstanding structural longevity
  • Minimal maintenance

Many architects now combine concrete with insulation systems that significantly improve energy efficiency while reducing overheating.

Roofing Materials Make a Bigger Difference Than Most People Realise

A roof experiences the harshest weather conditions of any part of a house.

The right roofing material can dramatically improve resilience during storms while reducing heat gain during summer.

Clay tiles remain one of the most reliable options thanks to their durability and weather resistance.

Natural slate is another excellent choice, often lasting over a century with minimal maintenance.

For modern homes, standing seam metal roofing is becoming increasingly popular because it sheds rain efficiently while performing well in high winds.

A Dream Home Should Be Built for the Future

When people imagine their dream home, they often focus on kitchens, gardens or stunning interiors. As architects, we think first about how that home will perform over the next 50 or even 100 years.

England’s climate is evolving, and our buildings must evolve with it. Selecting durable materials that resist heat, wind and moisture creates homes that are safer, more comfortable and less expensive to maintain.

Whether you’re designing your own property or hoping to win a house one day, the best homes aren’t simply beautiful—they’re built to endure whatever the British weather brings.
