Lambah’s journey spans a 15th-century Buddhist temple in Ladakh to the urban landscapes of Mumbai and Jaipur. Community-led restoration and traditional materials shaped the temple’s conservation philosophy. She believes conservation is never solely architectural; it is fundamentally an act of civic engagement. On Dada Naroji Road, she encouraged shopkeepers to restore the street’s Victorian identity. Voluntary signage redesign became a collective effort to revive the historic streetscape. During the Jaipur Metro construction, she mediated between development and heritage preservation. Her intervention led to the unexpected discovery of a centuries-old stepwell. The stepwell was ultimately preserved, transforming a construction challenge into a conservation success.
Throughout the presentation, Lambah highlights the struggle to balance modernity with legacy. Whether government bodies abjectly neglect historic forts in Punjab or create bureaucratic hurdles in the UNESCO nomination for Mumbai’s Victorian and Art Deco ensembles, her work consistently challenges their myopic mindset. She argues that the true measure of a building’s success is not its status on a national register, but the pride it inspires in the people who live, work, and move around it every day.
Lambah’s philosophy is anchored in the belief that an architect’s primary duty is to the integrity of the building itself, even when that means walking away from compromised projects, as she poignantly recounts regarding the Chandigarh Capital Complex.
