Through their innovative work, they created landmarks that are recognizable around the world as a tribute to Qatar’s heritage and global future.
Jean Nouvel is a French architect renowned for his unique and innovative approach to design and strong emphasis on light and material.
His works are generally visually striking and memorable while also responding to the climate and landscape where they are situated. Some of his most recognisable works include Doha Tower and the National Museum of Qatar.
He designs buildings that are unique but also harmonious with their surroundings, transforming the landscapes in which they are built.
One of his most celebrated projects is the National Museum of Qatar, an iconic building in Doha. Built in 2019, the project is a fascinating construction.
The building is inspired by the ‘Desert Rose’, a natural crystal formation in Qatar’s desert landscape. The museum’s design is composed of a series of interlocking disk structures that intersect at different angles, recreating the intricate look of the desert rose. Beyond its striking appearance, the building is designed with Qatar’s climate in mind, with the overlapping disks providing shading against the intense Middle Eastern sun.
The museum is home to centuries worth of Qatari culture, heritage and history. It offers visitors and insight into Qatar’s extensive history and development. It was built on the site of the former Al Thani Palace preserving a piece of Qatar’s legacy.
The desert rose references Qatar’s identity but its contemporary and modern style showcases Qatar’s approach to the future.
I.M. Pei was a Chinese-American architect known for his bold designs, precise and innovative geometric structures and modernist, architectural vision.
His main focus was through geometry of all shapes and a masterful use of light. Some of his most remarkable works include the Louvre in Paris, East building of National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha.
The Museum of Islamic Art was one of his final works. The museum features 18 unique galleries showcasing some of the most fascinating pieces of Islamic art. From paintings to textiles, the museum provides a well-rounded overview of the history and evolution of Islamic art.
It is one of the major examples of modern Islamic architecture. Prior to designing, I.M. Pei travelled on a global tour of the Middle East. He spent months gathering ideas and inspiration from other Islamic Architecture.
One of the biggest inspirations for the museum was the 9th century mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun. The museum is built on its own island reclaimed from the sea on Doha’s waterfront. He blended Qatari tradition and modernity in one of the most iconic features of Doha’s skyline.
The building greatly represents Islamic architecture with its geometric block patterns throughout every space in the museum structures. Designed for the Middle Eastern climate, the five-story building is built with climate-responsive designs. The disks are natural shading structures, which helps to keep the interior cooler and have less reliance on air conditioning.
Rem Koolhas is a Dutch architect renowned for his innovative and unconventional approach to architecture. One of his major works is the Qatar National Library.
The Qatar National Library is a civic and educational landmark in Doha’s Education City. The building is designed by its striking diamond-shaped exterior built to resemble two pieces of paper that are pulled apart and folded diagonally.
This structure maximises the light in the library and allows the building to feel spacious and bright while also having a striking exterior.
Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi-British architect, she is one of the most influential figures in the late 20th and early 21st century architecture. She was the first woman to receive the renowned Pritzker Architecture Prize and became known for her bold, fluid and futuristic designs.
One of her notable projects in Qatar is the Al Janoub stadium. This stadium was the second football stadium to be inaugurated for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The stadium features a postmodernist and neo-futurist design with a retractable roof and efficient cooling systems tackling Qatar’s hot and arid climate. It is inspired by the sails of the traditional Dhow boats, used by pearl divers in the region.
Zaha’s maritime design became a tribute to Qatar’s fishing and coastal identity with the World Cup amplifying Qatar’s global sports image.
Dr Ibrahim Jaidah is an influential Qatari architect and one of the leading figures in Qatar’s architectural development. As an award-winning architect, his visionary designs have helped shape the distinctive identity of Qatar through its architecture.
One of his most notable works is Al Thumama stadium, a venue created for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This impressive stadium represents an important aspect of Qatari culture, the Ghafiya, a traditional headpiece worn by young boys in Qatar.
Ibrahim is an example that not only was Qatar shaped by renowned international architects, but also its own local architects who strive to preserve its cultural identity. Despite Doha’s being an incredibly globalized city, Qatari culture is still heavily present through its architecture.
Arata Isozaki was a Japanese architect. One of his major projects was the Qatar National Convention Centre.
The building was designed with a strong emphasis on sustainability, efficiency and climate responsiveness. As the first building in the Middle East to achieve the Gold Certification from US Green Building Council. It incorporates passive shading, water conservation systems and energy efficiency.
Its main facade is unique and striking as it is inspired by intertwined Sidra trees, a symbol of knowledge.
